Criminology with Placement

During my placement year, can I work as a Special Constable? I don’t need to be paid; it’s voluntary and would provide valuable experience, enhancing my CV when I apply for a full-time role in the police after graduation.

My question is whether the police allow students like us to become Special Constables. If anyone has any information or has been in a similar situation, please let me know.

Thank you.

I don't think there's anything stopping you, but the process timelines might not work. All in, from application to finishing training, it might be 9 months absolute minimum - depending on which force you go to. Some might only have a couple of training courses per year - and you might not get on the first one. If you're going to do it, you'd have to apply very early on - definitely in first year, otherwise I just don't think training will be complete by the time your placement starts.

On the upside, you could basically pick and choose when you wanted to work. On the downside, you're not getting paid. It's easy to say you don't mind, but that gets really old really quick.

Thank you for your advise. I have more than a year until my placement year, and I'll be applying by September, which provides ample time. It's reassuring to know that the police are open to recruiting students. Money isn't a concern for me; I'm passionate about pursuing something I've always wanted to do, and my university will cover my expenses.
Thank you for taking the time to reply and helping me understand the broader aspects.
Best regards.
