PGCE bursaries
Hi all,
How long after our student finance is approved do we find out if we are eligible for a subject bursary?
I have been accepted on to a biology PGCE course so should be eligible - I’m just waiting for my student finance to be approved. My course lead says SFE will notify us before the course starts and I just wanted to know if this will be at the same time student finance is approved.

Hi BlueMonarch,
Your university would be able to confirm their timescales for processing bursaries. Once your application is approved with the income assessed element of the Maintenance Loan, they will be able to use your household income details to confirm your bursary eligibility and entitlement.

Thanks for your reply. As far as I am aware I the PGCE secondary subject bursaries are not means tested and are paid directly to us as a way to fund our studies. It is in addition to any maintenance or tuition fee loan.
I have already spoken to my ITT provider about an expected time scale and they have said SFE will notify me before my course starts (assuming student finance is approved).
Could you please advise whether this correct?

We will provide you with any updates via email and your online account and your entitlement will show on your inbox on your account once it is approved.
As for the bursary, SFE don't award bursaries, so that would be down to your university to advise of their timescale for that.
