Edge Hill or University of Cumbria for Secondary English PGCE?

Hey. So, I want to do a Secondary English PGCE. I was considering doing it at either the University of Cumbria's Lancaster Campus-aormer co-worker of mine, who worked at a tuition centre with me, studied Education there, and I go to Lancaster University at the moment-or Edge Hill University, in Ormskirk. Location-wise, the University of Cumbria's Lancaster campus seems to be more practical, but I had heard good things about Edge Hill's educational department, and it's also fairly close to me. Both degrees seem to offer similar things. They both offer QTS, which is massively important, and they cost the same. If I end up doing neither, I have a Plan C, which is doing a similar course at my old college, which offers uni courses in teacher training, and I may be able to do a placement at my old school (they would be local placements either way). Is Edge Hill good for education? My mum claims to have heard negative things about it, so now I'm not too sure. Has anyone got experience with either of these unis, and would you be able to give me any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Hey @Heathersrocks,

I have just recently finished my degree at Edge Hill where I studied Geoenvironmental Hazards which is obviously not a PGCE but I absolutely loved my time there. It is a beautiful campus based university which is currently having a new Students Union built, new accommodation and more. I don't have any experience for education but I do know that it is a popular university for this and that a lot of my course mates are planning to start a PGCE for geography next year.

I would recommend messaging Becky who has completed a PGCE in Secondary Science (Chemistry) with QTS as they will likely be able to provide answers to any questions you may have about studying at Edge Hill.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any further questions in general on studying at Edge Hill!

For what it is worth, I would say location wise, it makes little or no difference. You will spend the majority of your PGCE year working in at least two different schools. I too have heard good things about Edge Hill. I know nothing about Cumbria. It is worth asking where the catchment schools are. I can imagine being in a world of pain basing yourself in Lancaster and having to travel to Barrow for your placement.
