University modules/exam

Hi guys basically I’m confused and was wondering if someone could help me get a better understanding. Basically I’m a first year law student and as you may be aware we have many modules however according to university I’ve failed one module and it’s capped at 0 however the exam i did previously i am allowed to resit it in the upcoming month, the part where I’m confused is if i get 40% on this exam do i pass the module because surely they wouldn’t let me resit it if otherwise and lets say i pass all other modules except this one then what happens? I’m failing to grasp the concept here, any help will be appreciated thanks.

When universities use the word "capped" they mean "the maximum mark we will award you, however well you do, is..." For example, if you failed an exam and then resat it, they might say that you will be "capped at 40%", meaning even if you do really well in the resit, you will be awarded just 40% - because you had to resit it. The reason I mention this is because you've written "it’s capped at 0". That makes little sense. I suspect you mean, you were awarded a mark of 0% (perhaps because you missed the exam, or there was some academic misconduct, or whatever), but that you can gain a higher (well, a non-zero!) mark by resitting it. Is that what you mean? Or you really mean that no matter how well you do in the resit, the maximum mark they will award you (the "cap") is 0%?

The only other scenario I can think of is that they're making you resit the exam, and score at least 40% (to pass), but that they'll record it in your transcript at 0% because of some academic transgression you've committed. (So you must pass the module, otherwise they won't let you progress to next year, but you're not going to get the benefit of any of the marks). The "capped at 0" thing doesn't doesn't make a lot of sense otherwise.

The module meaning all the work i did through the year is capped at 0 but the exam I’m redoing there’s no cap on that i believe. What I’m trying to ask is if i pass the exam as it’s weighted more then the coursework part will i be able to progress to next year? Thank you for answering i know it’s confusing

The first exam i did like the original one they assumed that i used another students work i even appealed but the outcome was the same, that the module and exam will be capped at 0, but now they’ve given me the option to resit the exam.

You need to retake and pass the exam to gain the credits to pass the year. You will not be awarded a score/grade, and your transcript will show 0.

So the resit is for credits, not for a grade.

Can i ask one more question sorry for being a pain, i currently only have 40 credits I’m assuming thats because I’m a whole module down, but I’ve also been referred to retake 3 pieces of coursework from different areas which is relatively easy and I’ve completed most of it to and also the upcoming exam and a google search showed that for my university i need 120 credits to progress to next year, would you say it’s possible to get this with my circumstance or no?

How many credits are the modules for which you have coursework referrals worth? And how many credits is the module you've been capped at 0% worth? If those, and the 40 credits you already have, add up to 120 - then you're fine. (As long as you're successful in the referrals and the exam resit.)

Well, plenty of students do, so I don't foresee a necessary reason why you shouldn't successfully pass resits and move to the next year.

You will almost certainly be enrolled on the correct number of credits. It's just a matter of completing the assessments for the units which constitute the credits.

The ones I've been referred for are worth 20credits and a further 20credits (two pieces of coursework from the same module) the exam that I'm doing the modules worth 20 credits this is also the one i got capped 0 on, then i also have a mooting examination and that modules worth 40 credits

Well, together with the 40 credits you already have in the bag, those add up to 120 credits. So you're good. (Again, as long as you're successful in the referrals, the exam resit, and the "mooting examination".)
