Warwick has at least done a few projects and research bits around wellbeing and support for different kinds of students as I understand (was just reading one about mature students) so they seem at least dialled into that stuff. No idea what specific support they offer, and if you're based in Devon it is a fair ways away to Warwick.

My personal experience of wellbeing support at Exeter was pretty bad. I've also seen more recent threads on here since I left saying they also had a lot of issues getting support as a neurodivergent student there. So I'm not sure I'd recommend it myself, honestly.

Bristol and Bath might also be worth exploring? Not sure what specific support either offers but that can be something to look into as well

Look at 'smaller Unis' - less over-whelming, and usually will have more personal student support -
Sussex, Lancaster, Loughborough, Kent, UEA, Aberystwyth, Bangor etc.

My daughter has anxities and decided that being closer was more her thing. So although its nice looking at unis more closer to home, you sometimes cant get all 5 options on UCAS thats on your doorstep. But thats ok, you could think about compromising. Like your at Devon. Warwicks got a few changes and its a bit longer journey. Gloucester theres a train with no change and they have a uni there and its 2 hours on train. Maybe Reading or Bristol?

We live in Notts and daughter chose reading, bangor, lincoln, lancaster, and Chester. She decided instead to take a gap year grades in hand, reapply the following year and simply put Nottingham trent and Derby and thats it. She did not choose 5 the next time around, she only had two on her application. Shes going to start at Nottingham trent. Shes still living away from home (its still 3 bus journeys to her campus), but shes reachable and we can meet at weekends. She decided against away from home because if she did have a meltdown, she could not just hop on a train for 3 and a half hours journey and also not afford it every weekend. So you have to weigh whats best for you.

thank you for your reply !! this is defo one of the few downsides of living here cus there are very few unis around that are close lol. I'll have a look at Gloucester
Thats so cool for your daughter ! like you say, taking a 3 hour train is absolutely not an option haha
Bath spa is really good from what ive seen so i may look further into that one, but ill keep warwick in my mind i think just in case )
thank youuuuuu
Hi awmann,

It is great to hear that you are considering studying with us! I just wanted to give you a little bit of reassurance about our wellbeing here at Exeter, so that you would feel comfortable keeping us as one of your options.

Firstly, I would encourage attending the open days in October or perhaps a campus tour might be a little less overwhelming. You can take a look at open days here and campus tours here.

Secondly, a little bit sooner than October! We have student life talks online tomorrow, if you wanted to join and maybe ask a few questions on there, either via the chat or you can unmute and ask!

More importantly though, back to the well-being specifically. Before starting at Exeter, our well-being team strongly recommend that you fill out our Prospective Student Online Form as soon as possible to give us further information about the support adjustments you may require at Exeter. This can include accommodation needs and academic adjustments, which is a great way to get a head start on your support before attending in September.

Not only this, but before attending Exeter The University of Exeter AccessAbility team offers both an online and an in-person transition day for autistic students (including students awaiting diagnostic assessment).

These events will give you an opportunity to:

Find out what to expect when you arrive at the beginning of term

Meet current students and find out about their experiences

Discover more about the support that will be available to you at Exeter

Meet those who will be involved in supporting you e.g. specialist mentors and advisors.

Before this event, you will also be provided with a provisional agenda so that you are aware of how the day will pan out!

Additonally, whilst studying with us we have drop-in sessions available on campus (at our well-being centre) or via teams! Our drop-in appointments take place Monday - Friday 09:00-16:00, but I am sure you will have even more direct contact with your mentor(s).

Finally, about the vibe of Exeter, it can be really peaceful, considering we have lots of green spaces and beaches not too far from us!

I really hope this helps. Please do let me know if you have any other questions.

Best wishes,
Sophie, University of Exeter Student Ambassador.

Hey!! I’m autistic and was in a similar situation. originally I was going to Warwick, I applied and firmed it as my firm choice on UCAS. However literally a month ago I had a breakdown because of how far away from home it is for me (2/3 hours), and went through a massive debate of what to do. In the end I used ucas extra to apply to bath spa and that’s where I’m set to go in September. I felt at first like I was ‘giving up’ on Warwick because it was my initial dream, but I realised that no matter how much I liked the course there, the anxiety of being that far away would be too overwhelming for me personally. Bath Spa felt like a much more manageable distance which would still allow me some independence but wouldn’t feel as scary. The campus is lovely and so is the city, and tons of freshers have already connected socially, I’m on about 15 group chats and I’ve already made friends online with half of my housemates!

it is difficult to give advice on this not being autistic. You would be better getting advice from professionals inn this area.

However what I will do is outline the issues for you to decide.

Exeter does appear ideal in terms of getting home in an emergency. It had direct train access to places like Plymouth and Torquay so makes getting back easy and the campus is walking distance from the rail station.

Bath Spa involves a change of train at Bristol Temple Meads the a bus out from Bath as it is several outside the city. Bristol Temple Meads is a big station. How would you feel changing here in a panic.

Warwick is going to be difficult to get home from in a emergency. It would involve a bus from campus to Coventry, a train from Coventry to Birmingham, a change at a very big station in New Street then another train to Exeter or Plymouth.

You could possibly look at Reading which is on a direct train or Cardiff where you would get a train to Bristol Parkway then walk over the bridge to the platform opposite where you get a train to Exeter. Cardiff's campus is about a 10 minute walk to the station so te time to get wont wont be anywhere as long as Warwick

i relaaate i have a uni I really like but it’s 2/3 hours away and i hate the thought of my anxiety getting worse and being far from home. it’s such a tough choice. i have other options that are closer and more manageable but again im not as sure about the courses.

If you’re getting these grades do not go bath spa because they’ll accept people on C’s and D’s, put it as your insurance and firm Warwick, another chill university could be Exeter Penryn campus or falmouth university if you want a nice relaxed atmosphere.
