All About Placement Years

Hi all,

Placement years are becoming increasingly popular for students at university, and they are a great way to receive some really valuable work experience alongside your studies!

In between your second and final year of your undergraduate degree, you will need to work for a minimum of 1200 hours which is around 9 months full-time). If you are on a three year degree programme, this will turn into four years.

You will receive support and guidance from our Careers and Employability team and also your academic department in order to find an appropriate and secure placement that matches your future prospects. After your placement is confirmed and approved by our Careers team, you can then go on to transfer onto the placement variant of your programme!

In terms of payment, advertised placement year opportunities are around £16,000-£23,000 p.a. The University won't advertise opportunities that doesn't offer a salary, although some students do tend to take unpaid placements.

Upon successful completion, 'Placement Year' is added to your degree title (e.g. BA Hons English Literature with Placement Year). Your degree classification is still determined by your academic study (second and final year).

If you have any questions, let us know!
