Is volunteering worth it?

I don't have any work history for the past 5 years and i was told to volunteer to build experience and i can have a reference. Will it help me get a job in admin. I am volunteering in a charity shop.

It will provide you with experience in customer communication, being able to do a stock check and in general giving you responsibility.

It’s better than saying “I sit at home and watch TV” effectively. I’ve been out of work the last 11 months as I left work to pick up a Masters and am hoping my interview goes well tomorrow…

Effectively the best way to do well is to plug gaps in your CV. Ironically we’ve been told a red flag on unemployment for so long can indicate prison time that the person simply hasn’t disclosed… (yes the whole class laughed at this).

Long story short, any experience is good experience!
