sheffield or warwick?

i’m really stuck between deciding between these two unis for languages, pls someone give me advice it’s urgent </3

sheffield uni:
course is a bit more suited to my interests
the city is nice
accommodation is nice
good scholarship
but… my main concern is the distance from home is 2/3 hours

warwick uni:
nice campus and really friendly professors
rlly good scholarship
good reputation
closer to home (1 hr 30)
but… a little unsure on a part of the course if they suit my interests. however the other 50% of the course is perfect for me
accommodation is expensive
city is not very accessible and would have to travel out to bham or leam spa (i’m not a fan of coventry). i quite prefer being not far from the city

pls let me know your thoughts, it’s such a tough choice </3

Hey! How are you?

Whilst ultimately it's your decision, I thought I'd just jump in and give a little bit of my advice. I think it's so important that you like your course, you're going to want to work harder at it and have more academic success if you enjoy it, so just weigh up whether you'd be able to overcome the parts of the course you don't enjoy at Warwick. Perhaps you could contact the uni and see whether there's any options to customise the modules so you can tailor it more to your interests. I can completely understand how the distance from home can be a huge factor though, but with you saying the accommodation is nice at Sheffield hopefully this will allow you to settle in and not feel as homesick. However, feeling homesick is completely normal, and there'll be so many others in the same boat.

If you're wanting to go home regularly then I can appreciate having Warwick be closer to home would be better. I think just weigh up the pros and cons, living further away from home could help your independence, allow you to grow in confidence etc. But living closer to home enables you to see your friends from home regularly, have breaks from university, be around your support system. Have you spoken to your family and friends regarding the distance? They might be able to provide some insights you haven't thought of. If you do decide to live further out you can always facetime them regularly, plan things to look forward to in the future, cook dinner together on facetime that sort of thing. And just keeping yourself busy with clubs and societies and meeting new people is a great way to overcome homesickness.

I think just trust your instincts and what feels right for you. Definitely weigh up what feels right personally, not just academically. Is the course your number one priority, do you want to enjoy each module and focus on the academic success, or is being closer to home more of a priority? It sounds like both unis are great, so I appreciate how tough of a decision it can be, hopefully you receive some other advice on this thread to help you out, but yeah speak to loved ones, speak to teachers who might know you well to hear other opinions but make sure you make the right decision for you.

Good luck with your uni journey, I'm sure you'll flourish at whichever one you decide to go for!

Sheffield. Your only real negative is travelling distance which is an issue only a few times a year. (And 2-3 hours is nothing anyway - I travelled from Somerset to north Yorkshire for university.)

Sheffield.
Its the course you actually want to do and its a much more interesting Uni.
Sheffield is a great place to be a student - you will have great time Sheffield City Tour | The University of Sheffield (youtube.com)
(Warwick is on a soul-less campus in the middle of nowhere and the nearest place is Coventry...)

Okay why are people saying Sheffield, it says the course is "a bit more" suited, it's not like they hate the course at warwick. Imo choose warwick and work part time at uni if possible to afford the expensive accommodation as it will be worth it because of the difference in rep from employers.

And that 50% that you say you are unsure if it suits your interest, its fine even if you only enjoy 50% of your degree it'll be worth it when you graduate but chances are that you'll learn to love it while at uni unless it's really that bad in which case fair enough if you choose Sheffield.

Edit: but I'm just a sixth form student so if a person more experienced advises u otherwise, listen to them

Hiya,

I am currently a second year student at Sheffield who had to move around 2 hours 30 minutes from my home town so I can understand it can feel a bit intimidating being far away from home.

However, I do not regret my choice at all. Sheffield is a lovely city with more trees than people and great parks right next to campus that allow for nice breaks between studying and catching up with friends! While I initially felt homesick, there are plenty of events happening like give it a go with societies, freshers fairs, residence life in your accommodation and just settling in so I would definitely not let the distance affect your decision.

Sheffield also has a lower cost of living than the national average which makes it a lot more affordable for students.

If you have anymore questions, let me know!
