Uni is investigating my essay HELP

Hello all,

I am a first year student, having just completed the year. I got all my assignments back, and was happy with them, apart from one that was labelled with a capital i. I emailed the professor (as I didn’t know what this meant) and she said it was under investigation by the exam board.

This was a surprise to me as I hadn’t had any news from them regarding my essay, and if I hadn’t emailed I wonder when I would’ve heard. It has been more than 2 months since that email, and they have said “you are not eligible for a resit at this stage”?!?!

What does this mean?? I am STRESSING. Does it mean the consequences will be worse than a resit? Will I be expelled?

The only reason I can think of why it is under investigation is that I regrettably used a source too closely, and was lazy on my paraphrasing. I used AI to provide a VERY basic structure but wrote it all myself. And that is what I am prepared to tell them if they ask.

Please help!

You have plagiarised. Let's make no bones about that. 'Uaing a source too closely', 'being lazy with paraphrashing' and 'using AI' amounts to textbook plagiarism.

In first year it'd be very unusual to be withdrawn. Most institutions don't have that on the table until second or third year. What is more likely is a mark of 0, an.ungraded resit (to be awarded the credits, but without a grade benefit), and completion of an academic integrity course.

Let this be a lesson and be more vigilant in future.

Hi there,

Every university has different rules ad regulations on things like this, so it is best if you talk to someone at your university and see what they think will happen. If your professor has said she can't tell you, you could always ask your personal tutor if you have one of these as they might be able to help you on this. They might be able to advise you on what would happen if you were found to have plagiarised and what the next steps might be for this. Or, you could contact your university help team as they may be able to help you with this too.

If you are found to have plagiarised, it should be okay as long as you haven't copied loads of work and it was just a few sources. You might have been found out for using AI but if it was just for a basic structure this should be okay, but this will depend on each university. I would just do whatever resit/work you need to fix the problem if this is given as an option and then just use this as a lesson to not do that again and make sure you are citing everting correctly and not just copying chunks of work from other texts. It's unlikely you would make this mistake again now so just look at it as a learning opportunity.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador.
