Rejected from vet med

Hello, I have been rejected from vet med twice. Once straight after a levels and once after my gap year. I am gutted but I’m still wanting to go to university however I have a problem I don’t know what course I should take. Does anyone have any good recommendations. I was thinking marine biology or physiotherapy. However I don’t know which one would work out better for me in the long run as I want something high pay.I am planning to apply through clearing but struggling with the decision.

physio isn't likely to bring in high pay but there will always be jobs available. Marine biology may be more challenging to translate into a career?

hey, i’m really sorry to hear that. i also had two years of unsuccessful attempts for vet med so i do understand it’s incredibly upsetting. if you absolutely want to be a vet then it may be worth trying again this year ? you’ve done it twice now and hopefully you might know where you went wrong, try and reflect on what happened. were they pre interview rejections or post interview ? it might also be worth getting in touch with people on the thread from last year who you see applied to the same schools you did and got offers and asking them for their tips and advice, obviously they can’t tell you the actual questions but most people are lovely on the applicant group chat and they would be willing to help you out. just bare in mind if you did choose a degree you’d need to self fund 4/5 years of vet med including the 9k tuition fee and accommodation too. you’re allowed to apply while you’re in the first year of a degree i think to some of the vet schools as long as you have the right A level grades but then things might get a bit complicated with student finance and switching degrees / universities.

also i’m a bit confused, have you already done a UCAS application this year? it’s currently july so i don’t know what you mean by doing another course, do you mean you’d apply for 2025 entry ? if you’re doing another UCAS application remember you can apply for 5 choices so maybe use 4 of those for vet med again and then the fifth for something like biosciences or marine biology ? ❤️❤️

Hi, I don't know if you have heard that SRUC are due to admit their first cohort of veterinary science students this October/November. The course entered clearing on the 5th of July as they were unable to accept applications for the course before this date. There are a few forms you need to fill in to apply for this course, which can be found via this link https://www.sruc.ac.uk/study-with-us/find-apply-for-your-course/clearing-2024/bvsci-clearing/

I hope this helps if you still want to consider veterinary medicine/science.

UPDATED
Thank you @TMTDRN for letting me know it is only for Scottish and graduate applicants. I'm not sure how I managed to miss that piece of information as I have been on that website multiple times.

If you are still interested in going to vet school this year, then it might be worthwhile keeping an eye out for clearing updates from each of the vet schools in case places do pop up on results day (it sometimes happens).

Have you thought about biology, animal biology/management, or conservation biology? Biology is really broad, so it can help to widen your career prospects. In your postgrad, you can specialize in a desired direction.
I'm only going to pick up on the "I want something with high pay" remark. Remember two things:

1 - the course you do doesn't come with a job role attached to it (well a few do, like vet med, but most don't). So a marine biology degree, a life sciences degree, a physiotherapy degree (to a lesser extent) doesn't mean you have to become a marine biologist or whatever. If it's something you enjoy and will give you the qualification to take you into a number of different career paths that are attractive to you, that's the main thing. You don't need EVERYTHING planned out now. Definitely wise to think about employment opportunities following graduation, but a uni degree doesn't need to be a blueprint for a specific job.

2 - You're talking about 4ish years of very hard work. People don't do that just because there's high pay at the end. (Well a small number who want to work in banking afterwards might, but 97% of humans don't operate like that.) There's no point in something paying well if you dislike it.

How do I check these updates?

What kind of things could I specialise into after biology? I’d prefer something practical as I’m not really interested in doing lab work. Would I be able to specialise into something to do with vet med ?

Universities may state it on a clearing section of their website or they may also appear on UCAS clearing if you search for that. To my knowledge, vet courses tend to be advertised in clearing the day/night before A-level results day or on A-level results day. There's no guarantee that there will be any places in clearing this year, though.

Hi - they've just launched a course at my uni that might help? It's a two year accelerated course in vet bioscience and they say it is for people who want to then go on to vet school? It's Harper Adams University.

Vet nursing then convert to vet med?

That is a very expensive route - no fee funding for the 2nd degree- with no guarantee of success

If you honestly really wanted to you could start on a Zoology course which you could lead onto vet school after your degree if you decided to.

That's an extremely expensive option as Student Finance likely would not cover that many years at university. So you're looking at at least 40k of unfunded tuition fees. I would only recommend this option if you are very wealthy ie swimming in money.

You are very focused on funding which is a solely personal thing associated with individual circumstances. OP didn’t ask for funding advice just ideas on courses and routes in. I would think some funding is possible as a friends dtr is doing exactly this after missing out on vet school. Not stinking wealthy.

OP has to decide if a fulfilling lifetime career is important or doing a degree / career which is fully funded?

I will be very focused on funding when it is potentially making someone produce 40k out of thin air. You are right, it is depending on individual circumstances and because OP didn't say anything about that I have raised the matter of funding as it is something OP needs to consider. This isn't a binary between fulfilling career and fully funded degree, there are plenty of other options out there and I think presenting it as such is quite disingenuous.

Can you cite anything in my post above which is incorrect?
