I am too anxious at my driving lessons!

Hello,
Anyone got any advice for not feeling too anxious during driving lessons. I go into “panic mode” sometimes and at that point I might not recognise instructions from my instructor. The general anxiety also doesn’t help with making decisions on the road 😢

Its understandable to be anxious on the road especially for a beginner. Just remember to breathe, look around and listen. You will feel less anxious over time as practise makes perfect. These are some things that have helped me since March.

Decision making isn't going to come straight away. idk how long you've been doing driving lessons but it does take a while for you to get used to driving. So don't be hard on yourself if you haven't been doing it for too long, you will improve overtime. It's especially hard when you are in a difficult scenario that happens quick. The best you can do is use your current knowledge and work around it. I found that the best me for decision making was to just throw myself in and see what happens, see what I do so this way I can know what to do for next time.

Why do you think you go into panic mode? Is it because of your hazard perception? Remember that just because you are looking, doesn't mean you are seeing. You have to understand what you are seeing and if you can understand whats coming, you will be able to panic less because you're mind saw it happening. If you haven't, do some hazard perception videos so you can recognize some things.

My friends panicked so much when they were starting to drive, all the stories about how hard driving was made me so scared. But I never got scared when I started and I wondered why they were overreacting lol. They were just overthinking it, the more stressed you are, the more likely you are going to mess up. If you think logically, then you will be able to make the correct decisions on the road. I know its easier said then done but once you make a mistake, you just have to forget abt it, Being hung up on something will just not focus on the present.

Remember that your driving instructor is there to help you, if you do smt wrong - they will either take over or tell you want to do next time or you ask them what to do next time. They don't expect you do be a good driver. So with this in mind, you may feel less anxious because you know someone is by your side helping you. Ask your driving instructor questions too as many as you want. Not only will it be good for your driving but also for your theory/practical test.
