The Student Room Group

Rejected from Student Loan

@Sfe Despite receiving home fees for all my university choices I have been denied a student loan by SFE which I believe is extremely unjust. I have always been an ordinary resident of the UK and my parents have both maintained properties here despite my short absence, which was due to my mother’s temporary work contract abroad. I have sent all required evidence, including proof of my mother’s temporary employment, flights, proof of owning property such as council tax bills, yet this is still not enough to qualify for a student loan. I have always planned on returning to full-time education in the UK but the fact that i cannot receive a loan inhibits me from going to university altogether, as I am financially unable to pay the fees. This is completely unjust. I have appealed my application yet there has been no response after months of waiting. How will I know if I am to get a loan before the first academic term begins?

You might benefit from deferring your start to university for a year and moving back to the UK independently to work for a year. That will give more evidence to your case that your residence outside the UK was due to being a child dependent and your parent working abroad.

Hi there,

Can you please tell us how you went about the appeal? For example, did you e-mail the appeals team using this address?

Thanks, Graeme

Hi, yes the appeal was sent to that email address. I have since received a reply rejecting my appeal on the grounds that my mother's “temporary contracts can be construed as permanent employment” despite the letter we provided from her employer clearly stating the contracts were temporary. Since my appeal has been misconstrued, I emailed [email protected] and am told that a response can take longer than 12 weeks which means I may not receive an outcome before my first term of university starts.

Hi there, if you've sent a further appeal they will contact you once it's reviewed. We can't check accounts on this platform to determine the stage however, was that an email address we advised you to contact? Thanks, Jason

I have already returned full time to my home in the UK since I have finished my A Levels and wish to attend university here. My mother has also since terminated her contract abroad and secured a new job here. However, despite informing SFE of this, I am still basically being denied my education, which is disappointing and something I can't wrap my head around as I'm a UK citizen. sad ... Even if I do defer, I will likely be denied due to the rule that I must be "ordinarily resident" for 3 years prior to starting my course. 😕 just awful ..

The issue here is that I am uncertain of the outcome, so therefore do not know whether I need to defer my place before University starts, as I cannot physically pay the tuition fees if they decide that I cannot get the loan.
Hi there,

We are unable to access accounts and if you have sent an appeal then you will need to wait for the outcome as we cannot advise you any further.

Thanks, Drew
