The Student Room Group

GYG yr 10 going to yr 11

No idea how this thing works honestly.

Wanted to document my process as i grow my grades or something

Did my first mocks this year in june/July although my grades are not as I expected:
History (edexcel) -6 (suprised, i really struggle with content at revision)

Maths(edexcel)-5 (dissapointed few marks off a 6)

Triple science :Biology(aqa)-6(lost silly marks)

Triple Science:Chemistry(aqa)-5(hate Chemistry but I still want to do well)

Triple Science:Physics(aqa)-5(I'm only good at the calculation questions)

German(aqa)-6(capped at a 6 bc we all did foundation but I did higher writing and got a 7)

computer science(ocr)-7 (was a few off a 6 but my teacher was nice enough to remark less harsh, honestly I expected it though)

English literature(ocr)-6 ( not suprised, I struggled alot with poetry unseen)

English language (aqa)-6(dissapointed I thought I ate on the question 5, normally my strongest question answered)

Not sure what else to put here, I know how to revise but also motivation and putting the time in. How to know if I am revising effectively or not.

I know this isn't the final deciding score but when everyone else surrounding me is getting easy 7s and 6s it's hard to be put in very deflated mindset. I feel like if I can't do well on these next mocks, I'll have no really chance in getting into a good college/sixth form

Day 1: I'm starting with history today, despite the fact I got a 6 I spent alot of time stressing and doing last minute revision before the mock. I was meant to start earlier but then I procrastinated a bit ( alot considering I should've started at 12) honestly it's okay because I'm more active in the night for some weird reason

Update form day 1: procrastination did not ens up getting the better of me , I was able to slowly get back into the habit of doing history I use the pearson edexcel revision guidebooks and rewrite key information in simplified terms to help me remember.

as the weeks pass I will eventually finish half of the content for the topic american west ( we have only learned half so far) so then I will be able to just answer alot of practice questions and focus on getting my structure right.

the main thing I didn't do well in in the previous mock is bringing in my own knowledge to answer questions and also my phrasing of sentences that were actually my knowledge I need to get used to using the phrase "from my own knowledge I know that"

tommorow I hope to focus soley on maths again I didn't do as well as I had expected and got a 5 even though I was few marks off a 6 I need to improve this grade and get atleast a 7 as i am planning to pick maths a level and the requirements for my college want a minimum of grade 7

Day 2: I'm feeling good got alot of other stuff done, I think I'll try start maths soon and focus on more calculator questions maybe paper 3 in particular I think I did better on that one and found it easier, I just need to focus on not making silly mistakes at the front of the paper like I did on my last mock, overall not worried, just motivated

Update on day 2: procrastination did infact get the best of me, I ended up doing around 30 minutes when I was aiming for an hour I know your probably thinking it's not that deep but I think I really need to stick to routine to break myself out of a lazy habit

Back to the actual topic at hand i i feel like, my revision for maths isn't as effective and I have tried everything now I'm unsure should I go striagh in with the past papers or do all individual topic questions first then past papers idk

Tommorow is a new day, I don't know what I feel like doing since it will be the weekend I'll be less harsh on my routines and just " go with the flow" on whatever I feel like doing

Day3: chill but motivated slowly went through the day doing bits and snippets of my history work, I want to take my time and do it slowly so I can spend my time doing some effective memory retention instead

overall compared to what I was aiming for(30 minutes) I think an hour isn't that bad

Day 4, was able to organise my maths results so I know exactly what I need to focus on, I'll start maths early tommorow.

I did some biology today and my teacher gave me booklets yo complete as revision but it is really off putting and it just makes me feel like I cba but I don't know if I'm the problem or the procrastination in me is.

I think I prefer writing on flash cards and using cognito maybe next time I try I will watch cognito videos based on the topic instead first

Update GyG is not for procrastinators like me, it doesn't matter how many times I hold myself accountable. I'll still do nothing anyway

🤭🤭🤭update I lost my procrastination, I've actually been getting back into my revision habits slowly, I even did chemistry revision yesterday

For maths I was able to tick off the sine rule which was part of a list of the many many things I did wrong or didn't understand , only thing left is the sine rule and finding area and then I'm done

However I am struggling with revision for certain subjects like history, edexcel and biology aqa triple, I feel like for biology I know content but answering questions that have "levels" that u need to get to get good marks like big mark questions and then for history idk how to revise effectively like I copy notes from a revision guide book into another book and simplify it further, i also use gizmo a.i and it kind of helps but ik I could do better in history if I put the effort in. Additionall note is that I'm not a video person my attention span is rlly low and my thoughts are very much all over the place which makes it hard to pay attention I prefer to do anything else but watch a video.

Rambling on again but yh I js thought I should update:wink:

Back with an end of day update

Day 4: +3 weeks👀

Maths maths and more maths, with the tiniest bit of German and I also wanted to publicly apologise for lying to anyone that read mt previous post about me hating to watch videos to learn. I hate watching videos to learn unless the video is a tgmt video, on any type of level is and will be superior to any other maths learning video I have ever watched it's like a mini maths lesson and I love it. I did the sine rule today again but to find area safe to say I can tick it off the list of stuff I need to practise but I think on higher maths they like to throw in questions with more sine+Cosine so I think I'll take an off day for however long and then the next time I feel like doing maths I'll do Cosine.

Additional note to end the day, my history books keep glaring at me😔 yes, you guessed correctly I have in fact done 0 revision for history even though I'm doing crime and punishment and henry the 8th for my next mocks and I know absolutely nothing actually I know henry had 6 wives Catherines some annes and a jane who died. That's it. 👀

I recently bought a Revise GCSE Revision Planer with a yellow cover. I highly recommend using something like it or a BBC equivalent as it just gets you organised which is the most important thing!

you can 100% get 7’s+ in everything. you’ve got time. also your predicted grades are off the topics you’ve covered and those topics maybe barely come up in the actual exam. i do believe that schools mark harsher than gcse examiners. i was predicted a 7 in english literature from year 9-11 and got a 9 in the gcse. you have so much time to find a good revision method for yourself and get those grades up. good luck

Scheduling, I find to do lists too abstract timewise and I never end up doing all of it

for science, depending on your exam board, CGP has great books. i used their two full revision guide books and there workbook a few days before each exam. at the back of the revision guide there is a paper 1 & 2 for each subject which is really helpful if you have done all the past papers. the workbook is really specific with its answers which is good practice for the real exam. i just got my results back and got a 9 in all 3 from being predicted 7’s and i truly believe those books helped. good luck
