Student finance entitlement if previously attended university

Hi,

I wanted to ask whether student finance would fund my undergraduate degree in psychology. I have previously been to university, I didn't complete my degree due to health and family issues. I had 5 years of funding due to having joined a foundation year first and also having to resit the final year.

I have now applied for Psychology degree at University of Hull but wondering if student finance will approve lt considering the reason I dropped out many years ago, was my health conditions.

Will you be studying full time or part time at Hull?
Did you receive an early exit award from your previous study?
Will you be starting from year 1 at Hull?

Hi there,

Just one additional question from us: was your previous study all full time?

Thanks, Graeme

I will be studying full-time and starting off from first year. My previous study was all full-time as well yes. I have had a lot personal issues in my marriage then with a controlling husband. I broke free from it but it caused a lot of chaos and issues and that affected my mental health even more. I am now much better and have a strong support system in place. I want to do something with my life and not be a failure, which is why I want to pursue this degree and so that I may be able to help others with mental health problems.

Thank you - based on what you've said you won't be entitled to the Tuition Fee Loan for any years of the course because of your previous study.

However, it sounds like you have Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) for not completing the previous course. If you're able to provide some evidence of this we can look to award you additional years of funding.

Just to make you aware, Psychology can be an exception when studied part-time. This means you'll be entitled to the Tuition Fee Loan for the duration regardless of your previous study. So long as the course isn't distance learning you can get a Maintenance Loan too.

So, it may be worth asking your university if that's an option too.

Thanks, Graeme

Mental health nursing is another option worth considering. It is an exception course so you would receive both tuition fee and maintenance loan funding (and be eligible to apply to the NHS Learning Support Fund for the annual training grant and other benefits).

Thank you for getting back to me.

I am contacting my GP to get a letter from them to show what my health was like when I was at university. I will also try find any correspondence I may have to show I was going through a divorce as well.

University of Hull do not have a part-time option unfortunately and I want to study with them as they have the option of a fast track entry onto the doctorat in clinical psychology which is what I'd like to do.

Thank you again for all your help.

Just a quick one, can I send you a picture of the summary my GP has printed off for me. I doesn't have much detail but you can see that I had a diagnosis or anxiety/depression and borderline personality disorder at the time. I'm wondering if that's enough or if I need a more detailed letter.
Hi Arzoo0710,

You can't send evidence here for review but if you upload this to your account an assessor can confirm this for you.

As long as the evidence specifically states what happened, when this happened and how this directly impacted your studies, it should be considered.

Hi,

The issue I'm having is that I switched surgeries in 2015 and somehow my records from before that time have gone missing. I have the summary the GP printed for me yesterday but it literally only say 2011 - anxiety and depression and 2012- split personality disorder and then everything else is from after 2015. I'm worried it may not be enough 😕.

Thanks
Hi Arzoo0710,

If your GP can't confirm what happened, when this happened and how it directly impacted your studies, you would be best seeking evidence that confirms this from another 3rd party professional such as the university, social worker, police officer etc Anyone who is a professional 3rd party person who can confirm that in a letter.

Thanks, Clare

I am waiting for the GP to dig out my previous records and hoping they'll find something. I previously had lots of letters from the GP but I discarded them as I didn't think I'd need them again.

I have also contacted the university and they will also get back to me.

I'm hoping to get something from one or the other.

Thanks a lot for all the help.

Hi,

I am still waiting to hear back from student finance. The date on my online account was 19/08 and it's now 23/08 and I am yet to receive a reply.

I need to know whether the finance will be accepted so I cam start making arrangements for university along with sorting out accommodation.

Thanks
Arzoo
This is why the deadline to apply for funding for 2024/25 was back in early May - SFE don’t have unlimited staff and resources and therefore can’t always assess evidence quickly, particularly during August when their staff are processing thousands of course and university changes.

Hi Arzoo,

Timescales are estimates and can change on a day to day basis. If nothing further has been requested then do monitor your account for an update. Thanks, Jason

The date hasn't changed, it's still showing 19 of August which was Monday gone.

The issue I have is I can't take any steps to complete enrollment or sort out accommodation until I hear back as I do not know if the Tuition Fee Loan will be accepted given my previous study attempt etc...

Otherwise I'm happy with the timescales, I'm just a bit anxious about hearing back in time before University starts.

Hi Arzoo,

If your application status hasn't changed by Monday it may be worth sending us a live chat on your account so we can check this.

Live chats are available from 9:00am to 6:00pm.

Thanks, Graeme
