Two parents going to Uni

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend have an 18 month old child. We both met during our first year of uni and after both completing it, we decided to drop out and focus on the birth and raising of our little boy. We both desperately want to finish University, I want to finish the course I originally left and my partner wants to start a different course.

I currently work, earning around £23,500 a year, we also claim UC to top this up and provide us with additional finances, this is roughly about £600 a month.

We are by no means rich, but comfortable enough in our current situation. What I want to know is what are the chances we could both go back to uni, me for 2 years and my partner for 3 years and not struggle financially?

Would we both get full maintenance loans?
Would we still be eligible for UC?
Would we get childcare support?
Would we be eligible for any other financial support of any kind?

Would really appreciate the insight of someone who has done this or knows anything about it. We would both love to go back but wondered how realsitic it is. Thank you.

Hi there,

How many years of funding have you received previously? How long would the new course be?

We can offer Child Care Grant and Parental Learning Allowance. Both of these are Grants so non-repayable. You'd be eligible for Maintenance Loan, Tuition Fees available depends on your previous study.

Thanks,
Ross

Hi, I have recieved two years previously and will be requiring two more years. I should be eligible to recieve this as far as im aware as I would be returning to the same course which was originally approved.

My partner has one year of previous funding, she is looking at starting a new course in Primary Education with QTS and would require a full three years funding.

How much would the Child Care Grant and Parental Learning Allowance cover roughly? and how would we apply for this?

Hi Josh,

Can you please tell us how long the course is normally, is it 3 years?

If so, will you be returning to 2nd Year and then complete the course from there?

You can apply for the Childcare Grant when you make your application. We'll award you the Parents' Learning Allowance (PLA) automatically if you're entitled to it.

For the upcoming 24/25 year the maximum PLA you can get is £1,963. As for the Childcare Grant, it covers up to 85% of your childcare costs (maximum £193.62 a week for a single child or £331.95 a week if you have more than one).

The exact amount you'll be entitled to depends on the household income.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Normally it would be 3 years in length, but I have already done first year, so would be returning from second year.

Is the PLA per couple or each person?

Our household income would start coming from two lots of Student Finance should we both start University at the same time, although I would probably look to supplement our income with some part time hours.

Thanks,

Joshua

Hi Joshua,

You'd get the funding for your course if you're starting in second year, this is both Maintenance Loan and Tuition Fees.

PLA is per person. However, with Child Care Grant (CCG) only 1 parent would be able to receive this.

Thanks,
Ross
