What were my reasons for using Clearing? Zahra's blog

Hi, I'm Zahra. I chose to go through Clearing because you can use the process if you've changed your mind about the course or university you originally chose. It can be a great opportunity to explore other options and secure a place at a university.

From my experience of Clearing, I found that universities readily advertised available courses and made a point that students can contact them directly to discuss their options and secure a place. It was a great way to explore different opportunities and still pursue higher education.

What were my reasons for using Clearing?
Clearing provided me with an opportunity to explore other options and secure a place on a course that suited my needs and interests. It was a chance for me to find a great fit even if the initial plans didn't work out as I had expected.

I applied to university through Clearing because I wanted to change my initial choice which was primary teaching. One of the reasons for this was that I did work experience in a primary school after applying and realised I didn’t want to go ahead with that career route.

During the summer, I had a chance to research more about criminology, which had always interested me, hence why I changed my mind and applied through Clearing.

Why may others use Clearing?
There can be several reasons why someone might choose to use Clearing:

they may have changed their mind about what or where they wanted to study

they may not have received any offers from their original choices

they got higher or lower grades than expected

they haven’t applied to study at university for September 2024 yet

The process of Clearing
I always thought Clearing was for students who had applied to a few universities but didn't receive any offers or didn't meet the conditions of their offer. I discovered this wasn’t the case as I got all 5 offers but just wasn’t happy with going ahead with the primary teaching degree.

During Clearing, you can go through a list of available courses that still have spaces left and can contact the university directly to discuss your options and see if they would be willing to offer you a place.

When I went through Clearing I realised it’s important to act quickly because spots can fill up fast. First, I checked the UCAS website and contacted some universities directly to see which courses were still open. I knew which course I was interested so I contacted the University's Clearing hotline and admissions office.

The advisor on the phone asked me some questions about my qualifications and checked to see if they had a spot available. They made sure I was a good fit and then offered me the place. I then got the offer through UCAS and accepted to secure my spot. It was an exciting opportunity to explore different options and find the right university for me.

How did Results Day go for me?
Results Day was a mix of emotions for me as I knew I wanted to go through Clearing. It was nerve-wracking waiting for my results, but also exciting because it was an opportunity to explore new options.

When my results came in, I found out that I had met the conditions of my offers, which was fantastic news! However, my outcome did not depend on my results as I wanted to pursue a different course.

What was my Clearing experience like?
When universities take the time to understand your unique situation and interests, it makes the process more tailored to you. They can provide guidance on available courses that align with your academic background and career aspirations.

Additionally, they might offer specific advice on how to strengthen your application or provide alternative pathways to help you achieve your goals. It's like having a supportive team that's invested in your success. So, for me, a personalised Clearing experience made a big difference in finding the right university.

Preparing for Clearing
Here are some things that helped me prepare for Clearing:

Research: I took some time to research universities and courses that interested me. I looked into their entry requirements, modules, and campus facilities.

Be organised: I kept all my important documents handy, such as my exam results, personal statement, and references. When you find a university that interests you, note down their contact details, and gather all the necessary documents you might need for the application.

Stay positive: Clearing can feel overwhelming but try to stay positive and open-minded. Being as calm and composed as you can be is key. It's an opportunity to explore new options and find a course that aligns with your interests and goals. Take deep breaths, remind yourself that there are still options available, and approach the process with a positive mindset.

Act fast: I realised that Clearing spots can fill up quickly, so I was proactive and acted fast. As soon as you receive your results, be proactive and start contacting universities right away.

Be flexible: Keep an open mind and be willing to consider alternative courses or universities. You never know, you might discover a hidden gem that perfectly aligns with your interests and goals.

Seek guidance: Don't hesitate to seek guidance from teachers, career advisors, or family members. They can provide valuable insights, and support, and help you make informed decisions.

Be proud: Remember that Clearing is not a reflection of your abilities or worth. It's an opportunity to find a different path that may lead you to great opportunities and experiences. Be proud of what you have achieved, stay positive and believe in yourself.
