Computer Science at City, University of London

Hey, I've got a few questions about studying Computer Science at City Unviersity.

1.

What is the teaching like and how supportive are they when you don't understand a topic?

2.

What are the graduate employabiliy statistics like?

3.

Is the area a nice place to wonder around?

4.

Do they find the placements for you or give help when searching for one?

5.

Do they teach the coding completely from scratch?

6.

How is the group projects?

7.

What typically consists within the coursework?

8.

Do the teachers mark and give feedback often with our coursework?

If context is needed, I'm studying Computer Science, Maths, Physics, at A-Levels and predicted A*A*B (respectively). I'm probably going to be commuting and it'll probably be a 1hr30 journey. I'm also considering to apply to KCL and QMUL.

Thanks in advance 😊

Hi! 😊

Thanks for your message it’s great to hear you’re considering City! Just a heads-up, I’m currently studying Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering at City St George’s, University of London, so I’m not on the Computer Science course myself. That means I might not be able to answer everything in detail, but I’ll do my best to help and point you in the right direction where I can!
Here’s what I can share from my experience:

Teaching & Support Across STEM subjects, the teaching is generally clear and well-structured. Lecturers are approachable, and if something doesn’t make sense, there’s support available through office hours and extra help sessions.

Graduate Employability I don’t have the exact stats for CS, but City is known for strong industry links, especially in tech and data-related fields. I’d recommend checking the course page or reaching out to someone from the department for specific figures.

The Area City is based right in the heart of London, which means you’re close to everything shops, cafés, great transport links, and there’s even a lovely park nearby if you want a break between lectures. There’s a café on campus and loads of places nearby to grab food or coffee. It’s super convenient, especially for networking or attending events around the city.

Placements City has a dedicated Careers & Employability service, and for STEM students, there's a specialised team that provides tailored support. They help you find and apply for placements and internships, and from Year 2, they regularly send out opportunities you can apply for. You do need to apply yourself, but you’re supported throughout the process.

Coding from Scratch I can’t speak directly for the CS course, but in my own course, we were taught coding from scratch. From what I’ve heard, CS students also start with the basics, so no need to worry if you’re not coming in with loads of experience.

Group Projects & Coursework This varies by course, but group projects are definitely part of many STEM modules they’re a great way to build teamwork skills. Coursework often involves reports, problem-solving tasks, or project-based work, but it really depends on the module.

Coursework Feedback Generally, yes lecturers provide feedback on coursework. And if you don’t receive it or want more detail, you can always email them or pop into office hours. They’re usually very open to helping you improve.

Commuting A 1hr30 commute is definitely doable! Lots of students travel in from different parts of London and beyond. If you get a chance, I’d recommend testing the route during busy hours so you can get a feel for what it’ll be like.

Feel free to message again if you have more questions happy to help where I can! 😊
