6.6 k for student loan in London survivable? Help.

Hello i have accepted my unconditional offer from UCL ,i am trying to get into IB and unfortunately if i dont go to a target uni then getting into the industry will be a lot harder for me so i sort of have to go to UCL .

However i have fallen through the cracks of the system ,i just got my student finance and i have been told i will only get 6.6k for my maintenance . This as you can tell will not even cover my rent in London considering that most accommodations are around 300 pounds a week .I really dont know what to do at this stage ,im hoping there is some sort of error. My family income according to them meant that i could only max receive 6.6k ,however my family has a lot of costs and liabilities to cover especially because we live in a very expensive area(Oxford) ,my parents together will have less than ~200 pounds left at the end of the month so there is no way in hell they can support me .Because of this I'm not niche enough to receive a bursary and since the SFE criteria is so wide ranged and dont take into criteria costs etc they just box me up with everyone else, I don't know if i can receive anymore maintenance.

You’d probably have to ask your parents to make up the cost (that’s usually what SFE expects) or get a job and save up.

That’s what I do as someone who gets the minimum loan.

There isnt really a lot of time left for me to save up , im kinda annoyed that SFE took this long to inform me .

Nope I don’t go to UCL but my loan doesn’t cover living expenses or rent either so parent has to help out. If your parents can’t do that then the only option is to save up (what I mean by this in this context is to get a part-time job whilst at UCL), that’s what many students end up having to do unfortunately because of the system.
Have you checked the UCL undergraduate bursary and the accommodation bursary? One option is to maybe work for a year and save up before applying, rather than hope for available vacancies which will be fought for by hundreds of students.

Thats the thing , I had taken a gap year (im on right now) to save up because i had a lot of internal family issues that peaked so i needed to help with money so most of my money was gone , il only probably realistically be able to save up 3k before uni starts .The issue with bursaries is that they are very niche so they need to see if your dirt poor ,estranged ,have disabilities or a refugee .They wont look into the fact that my family has a lot of debt ,they will just see income statement ie whats coming in and not whats going out .
I’m going to be studying outside of London and student finance has given me £6,029.00 for the year which is 1,989.57 for my 1 &2nd year then third year is 2,049.86. My accommodation is 2,438.10 and which leaves me about £500 short and my dad told me that I’m going to have to put my maintenance loan straight to my accommodation and he said he will have to pay for the food and essential and so on but this might hurt him in debt as he struggles to put food at end of the table. I put a comment from the uni chosen the other month asking if my maintenance loan will cover my accommodation and food etc and they said yes but this is definitely not the case and I looked websites about student finance saying that maintenance loan covers food, accommodation, essentials and social life but this is also untrue… I’m gonna look for a job but the job market right now is absolutely rubbish. There’s so many people right now that can’t afford their rent for accommodation and I don’t understand why student finance can’t do anything about it at all but they can give 22 thousand to international students but can’t give home students enough to live on… maybe I’m wrong saying that idk

You have to be a home student for student finance. What is your family income?

Your best option is probably to commute from Oxford and live at home, bar looking at other unis outside of London. You'll have less maintenance loan even for that (as you get reduced maintenance loan for living at home) which will likely mostly go on train tickets, but it is theoretically possible.

As above student finance doesn't fund international students, they're either paying out of pocket or have some kind of scholarship (which may be from their home country government to fund them to study abroad, probably with the expectation they will return and work in that country to bring the "benefit" of that education to that economy).
Just checked and the commute from Oxford to UCL is around 1hr15mins (just need to take two trains in total it looks like it) so it’s technically possible as Artful says even if it’s not ideal. I effectively did this throughout sixth form.

The system is still broken regardless though.
Just say you are estranged from your parents. They will not check. The only thing that matters here is you being able to sustain yourself and maintain your welfare. Estranged students are assessed on their own annual income. Presumably yours will be well below the threshold for the maximum maintenance amounts.

How are you sure they will not check this ? surely they will ask for local council information or next of kin information as proof. "If you have selected estrangement earlier in the form, then when you select higher finance we shouldn't ask for your parents details. We will need you to send your estrangement evidence with a cover letter, and we will review this and confirm if this has been accepted. You can upload this online in your account under the evidence upload option. Thanks,Claire" >>>>> this is what an sfe worker said on this sub last year
