Freshers

If you're a previous student what was your experience of freshers? Were there things you'd wished there had been more or less of? What did you think of your SU? & If you're going to uni in September what are your expectations of freshers? What do you want to get out of it? What do you want to see from your SU?

Hi @prstudent2026

A student from the University of Bradford here! My experience of freshers for the last 3 years has been absolutely great! The vibes at the University of Bradford are immaculate - everyone is super welcoming and you feel very included, even as a newbie on campus🙂

You're met with tons of smiles, and given lots of freebies (the best part😂). You also get to sign up to multiple societies or activities and learn more about them on the day which I quite like.

As a student of Bradford, I would have to applaud my SU - as they do a fantastic job of being the voice and advocating for students on Campus at Bradford. I am certain if I needed support, I can go to my SU and will be supported by the amazing staff there.

Further to that, they do a great job at being extremely inclusive and providing opportunities and activities for students of all backgrounds 🙂

Thank you! I'm doing some research for some uni work and wanted to get some understanding of SUs and freshers experience across the country - this is super helpful! 🙂

Hi there,

I always think of freshers as quite overrated so less enjoyable. I don't enjoy the drinking focus, it would be great to do more introductory activities. That being said, many events are offered and Cardiff Students Union is highly ranked as one of the best!

Hi 👋

I can speak from my experience of freshers at Wrexham, of which I would say it was a great experience, there was lots to do. From parties in the evening in the SU, to events across the Uni during the day. For example quizzes, bingo nights, and meeting the therapy dogs and chickens that were on campus for the day.

The Uni and the SU did make sure that there was an event for everyone. This enabled everyone to make new friends and meet new people. As well as this there was an opportunity to join sports teams and societies, which is another great way to make new friends.

What would you really like to see at freshers this year?

Hope this helps,

Hi @prstudent2026,

I think freshers/welcome week is something I would always recommend. It helped me a lot to feel part of the university and to meet new people. The SU is friendly and welcoming with many activities and ways for students to get involved. There are activities for so many different people, so everyone feels welcome.

Having the option to join societies or even create your own is a great option too. It allows you to make friends that have a similar hobby with you. There is something for everyone which is the main takeaway from SU and freshers! 😊

Hope this helps.

Hi @prstudent2026

My name is Akshita Gupta and I will be starting my second year at the University of Southampton this September. Personally, freshers was really fun and exciting for me! Freshers' Week is packed with so many events, fairs, socials and activities - which make it so easy to meet new people and make friends! I remember the Bunfight fair was one of my favourites, as it was so fun to engage with so many different clubs and societies and see what they had to offer. I joined the Women in Business and the Kickboxing society at the Bunfight fair and it was one of the best decisions I made.

There is also the Freshers Fair with so many activities, games, giveaways and freebies. I remember going back from the Freshers Fair with three bags full of freebies like kitchen items, keychains, discount cards, cards and so so much more!

There are also many other events on campus and around the city during freshers such as mug painting, sports activities, societies welcome events, bingo nights, karaoke and much more! You can always find something to get involved in.

When it comes to the Students' Union, they were incredibly active and supportive. I would email them very often during the first few weeks for personal and academic support and they would always get back to me with very useful advice. They also arranged a range of events during the welcome week to help students feel encouraged, motivated and excited to start university.

Overall, I would highly recommend to attend the freshers events as it is a fantastic introduction to university life and is a great way to meet people. You should also get involved with the SU and make most of the opportunities and services they offer.

I hope this helps!

All the best,
