Pending results the open university

I’m so worried.. is anyone else dealing with this? And do you know why? Has anyone dealt with this before? (Psychology degree)

hi! i haven't personally dealt with this but a lot of others have, so don't panic . it could take up to 6 weeks for you to receive your results, but i've heard of people receiving theirs in a day to a week. if your tutor was ever off sick, you changed tutors or ever faced any disruption in that regard, that may be the reason. if you submitted a special circumstances that could also be it. unfortunately one of the most common reasons i've heard is that the university are investigating your exam or one of your assignments for academic misconduct. if it's that, you may have incorrectly referenced something, or scored a high % on turnitin, etc. I wouldn't worry about this- if it's a clear mistake (eg referencing) i don't think they will be overly harsh on you, and turnitin isn't the most reliable. basically, if you've done nothing wrong, there's nothing to worry about. however i would recommend contacting your tutors and the university for some information on the reasoning and the expected timeframe for your results, as i've heard they can be quite slow and not very communicative. best of luck!
Can I ask please what year you are doing in your studies ?

I am an OU student myself just finishing my 5th yar and preparing to start my 6th and everytime when I am nearing the end of a module and have submitted the EMA or Wxam my anxiety goes through the roof.

You're probably asking yourself the same questions of things like "Have I done enough on the questions to ensure they were correctly answered?", "What if I don't pass, what happens next if that's the case ?". These are all perfectly normal and believe me it's a pain in the butt, however, the primary thing I would always recommend is that once you hve submitted your assessment whether its an EMA ( End Module Assessment ) or an Exam, the best thing is to try and firget about it, put it out of your mind, relax and above all enjoy the break between making your submission and the date the results are due for release which takes on average 6 - 8 weeks from the date of submission.

The other important thing to remember here is that say for example if you submit your EMA say 10 days before the deadline date for submissions, you still have plenty of time to look through it again and potentially add something into it that you may have missed out when you submitted your EMA.

Now, here's the kicker, even though you'll have made that 1st submission of your EMA you can still make submissions of the file right up until the deadline of midday of the deadline date. Each subsequent submission replaces the previous submission.

In effect, you could make say 5 more submissions but in the end only the last submission you make at or near the deadline gets marked, once it is submitted the best thing is to do whatever you can to ignore it until you get the email saying your result are available.

Now, you'll also be wondering what if I don't pass, what can I do next ?. Above all DO NOT panic whatsoever, as long as you have scored near to the Overall Continuous Assessment Score ( OCAS ) which is generally around 40 % unless otherwise stated, say if your score is for argument sake 35 % and your OCAS is 40 % you've only got a 5 % gap to fill in, DO NOT WORRY about it.

You result would show 35 % Fail / Entitled to resit / Resubmit so it's definitely not over. The OU will automatically register you for your resubmission and you can arrange to have a phone call with a tutor who will be assigned to gyide students through their submission which was marked and discuss what you needed to include or miss out. I am in exactly that situation myself although I had my result for S319 Geology and Sustainability last monday ( 22nd ) which was a Fail / Entitled to Resit / Resubmit with a score of 32 % so I fell short by 8 points, how, I now have a chance to improve on that and if you were to get a similar result ( not saying it will be ) then you can grab the opportunity to talk through your submission with an assigned tutor ( a formal request for this has to be made through your student support team ), and above all use the opportunity and the time you will have between that phone call and the deadline date to make the necessary changes that will help to improve your result.

For now, don't worry about it and remember that further help from a tutor IS available and highly recommended. I have been through it once before and yes it is like a smack in the face but it should also be seen as a way of saying "ok I didn't get the pass this time, I need to find out where I went wrong" and that's where the tutor help comes in.

Hope this helps but please do ask any further questions if you need to.

You've got this.

No problem, I felt that as a fellow OU student that I couldn't leave you to ponder the many thoughts and questions that would be running through your mind regarding the various scenarios / outcomes that could result.

I have to admit that having been on the receiving end of 2 not so good results during my studies that it is never easy, to see that all the hard work we put in can result in a fail is like a smack in the face as I said yesterday. It's 1 of those things where we have to pick ourselves up and say ok where did I go wrong and sometimes it can be so blatantly obvious.

Anyway, I urge you to not think about it while you wait for your results and do try to do whatever you can do to distract you from thinking about it. Most importantly remember, the OU is there to help you through your studies and can put extra help in place if it is needed.

Hope this helps.
