how competitive is trinity for maths

I am aware that it is more competitive but my question is by how much. What would a typical successful application look like and how to know if mine is good enough.

Trinity is very competitive, and tbh very overhyped.
Most applicants will either be a) had a lot of success at maths olympiads (we're talking top 100 nationally at least, i.e. BMO2 level) or b) will have a very very strong interest (i.e. consuming books/theory/anything mathsy possible). If you don't stand at either end frankly do not bother applying as you will risk a rejection quite easily.

Your chance of getting into the uni will be the same even if you apply to Trinity. But yeah chances are you're gonna get pooled to some other college.

Would you say that Johns is a better option?

Oxbridge colleges are very much a personal preference thing. Pick the one you like the vibe of the most I'd say. The actual 'prestige' of each college genuinely does not matter one bit

Used to be the case, but you can't be as certain of this now. Your chance of getting into the Uni will be the same even if you apply to X College - so long as you get an invite to interview! Applicant numbers have been increasing so much in recent years that for more and more subjects in more and more Colleges there are far too many applicants to keep interviewing at the historic 80% rate.

If you really, really want to get into Cambridge, apply to the College with the fewest number of direct applicants for your subject, and optimise your chances of getting to interview. Then from interview, you can be pooled etc.
