Struggling to understand commercial awareness articles

I’m trying to do reading for my vac scheme and TC however I have no clue what they mean in the auricles.
I try looking things up and stuff but I only feel like I’m understanding things very vaguely.
Does anyone have any tips?
Should I read a few articles slowly, looking up things or should I just keep reading articles over and over till I understand?

Try reading the FT and the Economist.

Try reading the FT and the Economist.

That’s what I’m doing. I don’t understand much

Persistence is the key. It's a bit like learning a language, it's difficult at first when you keep having to google what terms mean and why a concept is important, but the understanding does build as your "fluency" increases.

The economist is good and well written - most articles in there shouldn't be too tricky to get your head around after a while. I personally don't think the FT is particularly helpful, it's way beyond what you need to know about the economy and financial markets as a vac schemer or a trainee (and frankly much beyond that too!), BBC business news pages are honestly probably all that you need. The Guardian too (no paywall), depends on your politics of course but I like their business coverage.

Other than that, have a google for some blogs or sites that cover wider commercial, technological, political and financial issues and how they affect law firms and the "business of law".

That should be more than enough to see you through a vac scheme and TC. Don't worry about it too much either - all these concepts get much clearer once you're in the workplace.

Thank you; this helped a lot.

In interviews how would we sort of apply this knowledge? Do we speak of the common themes and patterns that we see and how they relate to certain departments in the law firm?

They're just trying to gauge you're general understanding of things. They don't want someone taking a client into a room and being totally clueless. Know a little bit about everything and be able to pick up on the key concepts and terms quickly, be able to relate it to other things you know better.

You might be asked how a major commercial/business topic of the day might affect lawyers and law firms, or you might be asked for your views on it generally. It really does depend on your interviewer and what they ask - during my training contract interviews in 2008 (long time ago!) I remember being asked what I thought about the effects of the credit crunch (which became the 2008 financial crisis) from a general perspective.

I don't think you can go far wrong by keeping a running list of the major current awareness topics in the news, and having a rough response ready if asked about it, eg as a starter think what you'd say re the following topics:

Effect of AI on the economy and the work of a lawyer - is it an opportunity or a threat for law firms and why?

What would the impact of a second Trump presidency on the world economy? (this might be a bit political for an interview but it's good to think about the effect of tariffs/trade barriers etc. on the world economy)

Has the law kept pace with the rapid growth of social media as a news source? what would be the benefits and risks of stricter regulation.

The other thing I would say is that whilst it is important to perform as strongly at interview as possible, commercial awareness questions are going to be a relatively small part of the interview, and may not feature at all.

OP, the Investopedia website is useful for looking up financial terms.

For a fun intro to some relevant stuff, watch the film The Big Short.
