Australian applicant to UK Medicine

Hi All,
I am an Australian resident thinking of applying to UK medical schools. I am thinking of applying to oxford, liverpool, sheffield, glasgow or nottingham. I will sit the UCAT on the 8/8 and I do not think my score will be competitive for my own country. Australia's academic results get published on the 12th of December and they use a completely different system to A levels, IGCSE, GCSE and IB. How would I go around to converting my results? Since my results get released later, should I apply for undergrad medicine next year and not this year (starting 2026 v 2025)? Do I have to do my UCAS applications asap? Thanks all

Why do you want to study in the UK - there are plenty of good Med Schools in Australia.
The International fees alone for 5 years of study would be something like $350,000, then add in living costs/flights, you will need very deep pockets.

The UCAT cutoff for AUS is 3100+. Plus, Im paying for med schools anyways and want to explore all my options before commiting
Firstly, good luck with your UCAT. You never know how it will go, but I know Aus needs insanely high scores !

I agree with McGinger above that training in the UK will be prohibitively expensive and that there may well be cheaper alternatives elsewhere. I think it is better to study in the country you aspire to work if you can...

The UCAT element will be important here too, but not as high requirements overall. Your UCAT may limit the choices that you have available to you. So the ones to pick would be those which are strategically best after you have your UCAT. International fees also vary a LOT between unis and course lengths. Oxford is 6 years rather than 5 for example. May be worth looking at fee costs once you have your UCAT.

I am not sure on how timings work for aus qualifications but if it helps any in UK you generally apply for undergrad at start of final year of school (hard deadline mid OCT - UCAS google UCAS) and get results in the August before med school term starts in the following Sept. Not sure how that would tally with the educational system there. Lots of people apply in the years after that with achieved grades.

Each med schools website will have a qualification conversion section where you will be able to track your qualifications, and if not suggest you will need to email and ask of you have some niche ones that aren't listed.

Applying as an international applicant isn't something I know much about, but I do know that it is more competitive than applying as a home applicant.

There is a general thread I will find and link that might help with some broader info if you want to learn more, or the previous years similar threads may have the answers you seek.

I'd also look at Buckingham as the course is shorter.
please, if you are international, look at established university medical schools here as reputation in QS rankings is relevant for international students
( ie., even if not for home students who remain in the UK post qualification )
all best - impossible to advise without your UCAT score

I haven't kept up with med school applications so I might be incorrect, but I think you should be able to apply for 2025, and provide predicted grades. As for converting your grades, most unis have a web page where they display the grade conversions into different education systems, i.e., what grade in your school would convert into A levels. Hope this helps
