Why are PAP Smears so painful?

I've heard they are uncomfortable, but mine was far from uncomfortable! I almost passed out! I am used to pain and feeling crappy daily (migraines, dysmenorrhea, IBS), but that **** hurt like hell and didn't even break my hymen. I can't imagine how painful sex will be, seems hopeless!

What equipment did they use?

Smallest speculum. She wasn't prepared though. She fully opened it inside me and then went around the room and then got the rest of the supplies

Perhaps a self testing kit might be better next time?

Surprised they even did the smear if you are a virgin - they normally suggest waiting at least a year after becoming sexually active to have one as the risk of having abnormal cells is extremely low if you have not been exposed to HPV. The fact you are a virgin will have contributed to it being so uncomfortable.

With regards to sex, it's a very different experience to having a hard, plastic speculum shoved in... It should not be anywhere near as uncomfortable if you and your partner are doing things right.
