International Relations or International Development at KCL

Hi so I currently hold an offer for international development from KCL which I achieved through extra however I’ve had a look now and International relations is now on clearing.

Which degree would be better or has better prospects? I feel I would enjoy both but not really sure which to pick?

hi there !
Imo yeah; I mean I wouldn't say one has better prospects over the other, I would like to think that whichever one you would choose/prefer to do, you will excel more in it as you would enjoy it and not see it as a burden to study it for the next 3 years, and hence you'll be able not to only get a first but also join up societies and level up your cv and network and all that great stuff, right. Like I myself applied for philosophy, politics & economics; could one say, that those who are going in to study political economy or economics and management or even straight economics, would have better prospects overall? well I mean, sure, perhaps; ppeists mainly go into government jobs/civil service whilst econ grads go into finance and stuff which is higher paying but really either graduate could go into either sector, it all just depends on how much one puts themself out there and works hard for the career they want to follow. It just seems to be skewed in that people who study econ would enter finance and that's why the degree is seen as more lucrative, alr, even though anyone; even say english or biomedical graduates– totally unrelated courses, can still enter these sectors it just depends on networking, applying for the spring weeks/internships and that person's own goals, and I can attest for this via people on linkedin.

With that being said, honestly I think that you should pick the one you feel would enjoy the most and hence excel on so you'll be able to come back to it after time doing other stuff like societies, smash it, and enjoy your uni experience more on the whole. To find that out, really see into the modules that they both do, as well as scrutinise them carefully that way you know for sure that this is what I want to be studying. Because although they are similar, ofc as we both know, they are different alrr, but yeah💫🙏

most certainly; I've read stories about this and was into it a lot because I wanted to switch to econ management, but then I realised that acc nah I'll stick with ppe since I like it more (wanted to switch for career prospects) until I was told by people at uni and graduated uni that it's more so yourself and your institution over the degree. um, one sec lemme see if I can find stuff backin this notion,
edit: also follow ages' advice too ask king's tomorrow too💫 perhaps a live online chat or a call or something, an email (considering their admin) might get aired for some time, I think

I do think you will be able to, considering how you've noted that the course has been on/is on clearing which is a good sign it shows viability still, um
here's a thread on tsr about someone who wanted to do this last year
https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7253261
I reckon it comes down to whether the courses are in the same department and get in contact with kings before course starts; as you'll be able to see a couple of comments down below, a user fiastudies was able to successfully change last year. they said to

'Contact your department head like well before the course starts, once it does it is pretty much next to impossible. Before you enrol ideally is the best situation, and let them know of your intentions. They will get back to you regarding the capacity of your desired course and further info abt your grades etc.'

A user named Hanlooc said

'If this helps, I attempted this in my first year at kings within the first two weeks of starting and they refused and I had to study the course for a year before changing, it may be possible to change before you enrol, but definitely don’t leave it too late like I did.'

So if you are hundred % certain on it my dear friend then go for it, and typically now (tomorrow that is anyway)
It's defo possible, and since you've seen them on clearing there are higher chances that there will be space left on the course.

Do you reckon I could transfer courses?

tbh they also did say (fiastudies) that

'I basically contacted (via email/king's apply) the respective head of departments, usually that information is available on google if you just search up 'head of [the dept you wish to change TO] department kcl' and then ask them if they have space to change to that program. If they approve then contact your dept head (of your current course) and ask them to approve. After this happens your original department should put a request through for a transfer to your desired dept and then it should be completed.'

Someone went onto ask them about changing even after results day, and this is what she had to say

'You still have time to change! I did it this time last year. No my course was in an entirely different department and different faculty for that matter. Although, the subjects and grades I achieved at IB (International Baccalaureate) allowed me to switch to my new course - that is important. As for contact info - it is all available on google - just type 'head of [current dept] kcl' or 'head of [desired dept] kcl' (for the course you wish to switch to. You could even email the admissions department but I was advised to email HoD.'

I hope this helps💫🔵

Hi! So I ended up sticking with International Development however I went through clearing on results day to see if I could get anything better and UCL joined for the first year, so I got an offer for BSc Global Humanitarian Studies, more aligned with my future goals and the uni has better graduate prospects.
