Anyone applied for Portsmouth University?

Hi,
I’m hoping to study marketing at UoP September 2024, staying in Trafalgar Halls.
If anyone else here is going what will you be studying?
Would be nice to get to know people ahead of time 👋🏽

I have a place on the Psychology course, I'm staying in a private student home near the uni.
Hi I hope you are doing well,

For me, when I was looking at coming to the University of Portsmouth, I found the best way to meet people before coming to uni is through Facebook groups and other online platform. Once I had applied, I was invited to join Facebook groups for my accommodation and course etc. This was a great way for me to meet lots of different people, many of which have been good friends ever since!

I found this one below which could be of interest but there are many more that can be found which should hopefully help

Don't worry about making friends when you move in as well, everyone is in the same boat and looking to make friends as well. We host a lot of freshers events in the first couple of weeks of university where a lot of different activities and events are put on and that is a great way to meet people and hopefully make new friends!

I hope this was helpful,

Thanks for your sharing with us. I specially like to know more from you because you are studying Film Production, and my younger friend is very interested in 'Screenwriting' course in Portsmouth. Can you share with us if it is a wise choice to study film in Portsmouth? My friend is also trying to make comparison with Worcester's 'Media & Film and Screenwriting'. Please let us know your viewpoint. Thanks!

Hi I hope you are doing well,

Obviously I can only speak of my experience with the course and I won't try to sway your opinion either way but rather your friend should make the decision that's best for them. I love the film production course at Portsmouth and I believe it has a lot to offer.

Firstly I do film production which means the course covers every aspect of filmmaking and then you specialise into an area you want to go down in your second year so I want to be a screenwriter and director and the modules I picked reflected that goal. With the screenwriting course, it is primarily focussed on screenwriting and narrative theory with some overlap with the film production course so you will share some modules on learning how to use the equipment etc. Both courses offer a lot and are very good picks it just depends on what works better for you.

According the Guardian's rankings for 2024, Portsmouth is ranked 3rd in the country for Film and Photography and that is reflected in the state of the art facilities we have to offer. Any student doing a creative course at Portsmouth is based in the Eldon building and can access the studio facilities we have including two TV Studios, several black walled film studios, a digital scanning room, a motion capture studio, and a green screen volumetric studio as well as our new CCI XR light stage which mirrors the technology used to make the TV show 'The Mandalorian'. This is the only one in an academic institution in the country and only one of a couple in the UK. All of the lecturers are industry professionals so you will be working with people who have been or still are screenwriters at the top of their field including a writer for Tracy Beaker and Hollyoaks as well as a lecturer who was a script doctor / editor in LA and has published numerous books on screenwriting. You will also have access to all of the camera equipment we have to offer which is again industry standard and the cameras we use were used by many of the OSCAR wins this year!

On a personal level, what I love about the course is how hands on it is. You are really given the freedom to make the projects you want and to tell the stories you want. The freedom and the control is in your hands and the lecturers are there to guide you in the right direction and to help where they can. You are given the freedom to dream big and to think without much limitation (without straying into delusion 🤣 ). The courses are also very collaborative so you get work with a lot of different people and work on each others projects to help them out and building up an impressive CV which I think is a fantastic thing.

Overall, to cut a long message short, I think that Portsmouth has a fantastic film course and if you were to choose it I think would be a choice you wouldn't regret but ultimately pick somewhere which is best for you and where you think you will be happiest.

I hope this helps and any more questions just let me know!

All the best,
Daniel (University of Portsmouth Student Rep)

This sharing is wonderful. I am sure he'll love this very much. He is an international student and too busy (struggling with his final year in IB DP) to travel to the UK for visiting Portsmouth. Luckily, his parents will have a business trip to England in early December, would very much like to have a visit of the University. Hope they can find a correct contact person to arrange their visit to UoP. Again, many thanks!
Hi,

I'm glad all of this was useful, and I hope his final year goes well, it's never easy but that final push is worth it!

Throughout the year, we have a number of open days that are welcome to all prospective students if he was interested in visiting the University. On these days, you can take tours of our city, visit your course building and meet the lecturers on your course and learn more about it as well as getting to see all of the facilities on offer. For the film related subjects, they will often take you on a tour of the everything open to students including the cameras and the film studios. The open days are a great way to really get a feel for a university so hopefully you are able to make one of the dates (see below).

Saturday 7 September 2024, 8.30am-4pm

Saturday 5 October 2024, 8.30am-4pm

Saturday 9 November 2024, 8.30am-4pm

Saturday 7 December 2024, 8.30am-4pm

You can sign up for them here: https://www.port.ac.uk/study/open-days/undergraduate-open-days

All the best,
