Does a level 4 affect student loan for a degree?

Hi, my daughter did an AAT apprenticeship leading to a level 4 qualification. She has decided she wants to do a teaching degree (3 years).
Will this affect the funding for the degree? and does it matter how long it took her to complete the level 4. She did it part time (in her own time) whilst working, but because of Covid and periods of time with no tutor it took just over 2 years to complete.
Many thanks for any advice that can be given.
Lisa
Hi there,

So does you daughter already hold an undergraduate degree and would the new course she wants to study be the same level of qualification that she already holds? Can you confirm what university she will attend, the full name of the course and when would she start the course?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew, the AAT level 4 is her highest qualification. She will be going to Plymouth Marjon University to do a BEd Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), X120, starting this September '24.
She hasn't been to university before, just the AAT level 4 whilst working full time.
Many thanks
Hi there,

Does your daughter already hold Qualified Teacher Status? Is it a 1 year course?

Thanks, Drew

No, she hasn't got a degree or have Qualified teacher status. It is a 3 year degree course that ends up with a BEd and QTS at the same time. I think the placemenmts are just slightly longer and more in depth in the final year to get the experience needed to get the QTS inside the 3 year degree. I'm aware that some other degrees like this are 4 years, but this one is 3 and does not need a further qaulification year afterwards.
Hi there,

If the student does not hold an undergraduate qualification and does not hold qualified teacher status then they should be eligible for full funding for the course.

Thanks, Drew

Thank you for this. It was just confusing as it says Level 4 which is equivalent to a HNC is classed as a Higher level qualification as opposed to a further education one.
You're welcome. If you have any further questions you can ask us on this platform.

Hi Drew, if your still able to answer this.
My daughter got her decision from student loans today and they have said she won't get funding for her 1st year, just years 2 and 3, as they have taken off 3 years of funding for her level 4 AAT qualification.
Is there an appeal process we can follow? I'm really disappointed for her, as it was not her fault that the course took so long. It is normally around 12 to 18 months to complete, but due to Covid and the college provider having trouble with having tutors, it took just over 3 years. Sept 19 to Nov 22 by the time her synoptic took place.
It was all part time study, not full time.
So I did get my initial length of time wrong, but it still feels rather unfair.
Many thanks for any help,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

It would be best to access your daughter's account so we can check this.

Can you please ask her to send us a live chat on her account, or call us on 0300 100 0607? One of our team will be able to help.

Thanks, Graeme
