Has anyone in F1 graduated from Edinburgh Uni?

I'm a junior in high school in the US and plan to attend university in the UK. I hope to work in F1 on one of the race teams, and I'm wondering what the best way to do that would be. I plan to major in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Edinburgh and then do a post-grad at Cranfield. I want to know if anyone in F1 has come from Edinburgh University, or should I go for Cambridge or Oxford Brookes? Any other advice about getting on a race team would be great too!

F1 has quite a wide spectrum of universities. It’s worth noting when you apply to an F1 team you’re applying to a specific role not to join a team as a generic engineer. It is competitive and those who are successful can demonstrate a long active interest in F1/motorsports (often including involvement), of course a strong understanding of what role you are applying for and demonstrating (with evidence) you are an excellent engineer who will thrive in the environment.

Getting involved with formula student (or formula sae is one way to demonstrate being proactive), actively volunteering or working in motorsport suppliers or local / junior racing series is a normal part of the process but also honing specific technical skills and high competency in the area you are interested in (particularly for technical development roles) for traveling roles (networking is very big so getting involved at any level of motorsports is important).

Hi @Mermaid_Crystal,

Your university choices are great for pursuing a career with a Formula 1 race team 🏎️ It’s worth noting that every Formula 1 team has at least one graduate from Oxford Brookes, but each institution has its own unique strengths.

It might be helpful to focus on factors such as industry connections, research opportunities, and partnerships with motorsport teams. You may also want to consider the campus facilities and the hands-on experience each course provides.

Best of luck with your applications! If you have any further questions, feel free to drop them below!

Best wishes,

Clare
