Former YEAR 13s aspiring in MEDICINE.. URGENT HELP!

Hi I'm a y12 student going into y13 in September. i got accepted into a hospital volunteering position which would be every Saturday in the evening. 6 HOUR SHIFT, for a 6 month commitment. but this would be very useful for my work experience and my interviews as it will be in actual wards with patients.

I need to decide whether to accept this position or not by tomorrow evening.BUT i'm worried that this would affect my year 13 progress, because the workload would be insane (as far as I know) and I take bio chem maths.

Any advice?? Idk if I should accept this position.
I don't think doing a 6 hour part-time job on the weekend during A-levels is really as much of an undertaking as you think it is.

Also there's no reason you can't stop doing it at a certain point if you feel it's unsustainable. They can't compel you to work there if you don't want to, and especially as you're not getting paid you have relatively little to lose by stopping at some point.

It probably would be a valuable experience though and I don't think unreasonable to do even at least to start with.

Many students work part-time for longer than 6 hours a week. I would accept it.

I understand where the worry is coming from but as long as you’re on top of your work, I think it will be fine - you already sound very committed. It’s not sustainable or necessary to study constantly so it could be a good weekly break! Also, it is volunteering so if it gets too much then you can always quit around exam season and still have experience to speak about in interviews etc

Well done indeed for getting accepted into the volunteering programme. It is so hard to get experience of any kind in a hospital.

Six hours on a Saturday night is pretty good timing too and will give you a bit of a break from academic work as well as excellent evidence for any future career decisions.

Grab it with both hands. Good luck.

Edit. As you know, for medicine it's some about what you do, but a lot more about how you reflect on it. Google the RCGP reflective journal / diary as a starter and have a read about reflection and how to write your observations down. Will really help when you get to interviews. An excellent opportunity.

Thank you!

About the interviews, can you give me a few examples of how they would ask questions about your experiences? Are there certain universities that ask you in detail or is it mostly all of the med unis?

It all depends on you and how well you think you manage your time.
Also quick question.... How did you get it (the volunteering) because I've searched and there aren't many options available?

I know one question they always ask is why do you want to be... (Whatever it is you want to be)
Like if you want to be a doctor then why a doctor instead of a nurse....

All of the medicine course interviews will ask you questions to test you. It may be on personal attributes or values or it may be on experiences and reflections, or a combo.

Some ask everybody the same question and you tailor your responses to them; or some have your PS and ask you things about it. Others ask you for a separate doc about your work experience etc after you apply.

Look at RCGP doc I mentioned previously to help your reflections.

You could use your free periods to try to catch up on work also revising after school should be fine. Maybe even if shifts are quiet you could revise. Make sure to go over topics which are difficult after learning them though, it’ll decrease your workload when it comes to a levels

I would take it. It'll mean less free time but maybe thats a worthwhile sacrifice. Skip some of the "routine" social stuff , get up a hour earlier and you'll fit it in.

I've got it in a private hospital which focuses on palliative care. I privately emailed them and they gladly offered a place

Hi! It isn't an internship I'll say but I can give you some tips!
I personally nagged them soooo much, like almost as if they're forced to give me a place lol
I called and emailed, repeated that to finally get a place. It was quite hard to because I was underage, but they let me anyway because I would be 18 by the time the contract starts.

You could look for internships in local/private hospitals. I applied for a private hospital, and my friend applied for the Princess Alice Hospice (the actual hospice, not the charity shops) through a Ward Support volunteer programme. I suggest you looking for health-care related centres such as dentists and hospices, and continuously email email email and call call call.

If you were getting paid for this (which you aren't) you shouldnt have to do this for 6 months straight. You could definitely use that time to revise since u only have one shot at a levels. Maybe try and get it reduced to a month?
