What is Lancaster City like for young people?

I am moving to Lancaster from the South for work for at least the next 2-3 years. Obviously I intend to visit as soon as possible but I want to ask people what the city is like for younger people?

I'm especially interested in live music (bands), nightlife, bars, indie/arts spots. (Also, where would you recommend based on this or for younger people generally?)

I am also hoping to join University socieities being on an apprenticeship, if you are a student, would you say the University/socities carries your experience of living in Lancaster?

Do you think me being a southerner will make it hard to integrate and get on with people? I have heard that the people are quite friendly, that suits me well and fits me better than the south anyway.

My daughter has been there for 4 years and just graduated and knowing from her and having visited myself a few times the bar scene is fab. Water witch is a great pub on the canal and a lot of students like to sit outside on the picnic tables there. Pendle witch on Penny street. two fridays ago it was packed. we got literally the last table. played good music, it was busy in the pub garden as well. Ye olde john o gaunt was playing live music as we went past ( we was eating at the gallico lounge and making our way to pendle witch). Cornerhouse which was near to my daughters second year accommodation was always busy. As well as the study room, the crafty scholar and stonewell tap are popular student spots.
night life uni students go to sugarhouse, and glow (all public). she liked the music better at glow, as it was more dancy than the usual souped up chart music.

Her flat of twelve in first year had varied places of where they lived. One was all the way from jersey. Daughters from notts, one was birmingham, another gloucester, one london, one stockport, one edinburgh. Cant remember the rest. 2 was private educated, the other 10 not.

She joined during covid year of 2020, so her societies was on line to start. She joined disney society, and Physoc for physics. She preferred the physics one with it being associated with her course. She and a friend had badminton racquets, so they did badminton at the uni sports centre on a Sunday day. She also had friends where she did a pub quiz at the pendle witch on a Thursday. She would also visit her friends houses as well, so for at least 3 of the evenings she would be busy. The other evenings she would be doing problem sheets, revision notes or netflix binge watch.

She also lived in private halls in year 3 on penny street, and loved it there. It was a range of various years in the flat from 2 first years up to phd students and she quite liked that 🙂

i’ve just finished my second year at lancs. it’s a lovely town and even though i’m not the most social of people there’s a ton of good places to hang out.

for music check out The Pub. literally called just that. they usually get live bands in quite a bit - rock and metal stuff if you’re into that. the old john o gaunt sometimes has live music too. we usually have a music festival in town which is awesome - most stuff is free and just going on throughout town.

not usually my scene but greens, the crafty scholar, and the sugar house are all good for nightlife - for sugar i think you do have to be a lancs uni student.

the rock society at the uni meet at The Pub every monday - usually a themed social every other week (punk vs emo night, karaoke, dress as your favourite musician etc) otherwise it’s just requests night and drinks.

i’m autisitic and adhd, so again, not the most social person. but societies can be really awesome. a couple of my friends say their societies have pretty much made their uni experience. and don’t worry about being southern there’s people from all over, north, south, midlands, abroad - lovely people.

hope you have a blast

Hi!

In my experience, Lancaster has been a great city to live in as a young person! Live music is very common in Lancaster, with many pubs hosting live music bands regularly. Around October/November, there is a music festival in Lancaster where you will find live music performances all over town (lots of which you can see for free). There is also a music festival in Williamson Park every summer which often has some big performers (although you do have to pay for entry). There are some great pubs and bars (many of which others have mentioned above) all with different vibes so there is something for everyone. If you like pub quizzes, some great ones happen every week (my favourites are The Study Rooms and The White Cross).

Societies have definitely played a big part in my time at Lancaster! Joining societies is a great way to meet more people and also spend time doing something you enjoy. They usually hold regular events and socials which might help you discover your favourite places in Lancaster. Sports societies often hold socials on Wednesdays as well as training throughout the week and non-sports societies will have events throughout the week! If you are interested in joining any societies, many will offer free taster sessions in October so you can try a few out.

I am from the south as well and have had no problems at all, most people are friendly and there are lots of people in Lancaster who aren't from the north so you don't need to worry about sticking out!

I hope that helps give you an idea of what life in Lancaster is like!
