Scared to start university

Hi everyone yesterday iv received the email from the universe witch I could login into the email then I started looking at timetable and what models I was doing just to refresh my mind
It made me feels scared because I feel like I’m
Not ready to go to university to study photography
Even if Its my first year I will try and keep my hope up even if im scared at least I have a friend form my school at the university but in an other campus so that wold make it a bit less scared
This is very normal. Thousands of people are at this stage now and the reality of 'going to Uni' can now start to feel a but daunting. The thing to remember is that everyone will be feeling a bit like this -a bit excited, a bit worried, and that this is understandable - its a normal reaction. These worries are what Freshers Week are all about - reassuring you, relaxing you, making you feel that you belong there. Once you get there and get cracking, it will start to feel easier and within a week, you will wonder what you were so worried about - promise.

Anxiety & it all feeling very daunting is the norm, everyone else feels the same although not everyone will openly say it.

Universities have lots of support and will give you a tutor, course director & have a students union so you have plenty of people around to help you get settled and up to speed your first few weeks. Plus you’ll be surrounded by people in the exact same position as you (so you kind of have a camaraderie with people you meet in your first week or two).

Hi there,

Lots of people feel like this before they start University and it is completely normal to feel this way. Try and remember that most people will be feeling a bit nervous too and you are all in the same boat!

During freshers week there will be lots of opportunities to meet people, meet your tutors and look around the campus and some of the uni buildings which should help you ease into life at uni and help with your worries and anxieties. I would say it is a good idea to try and go to the freshers fairs if you can as this is the best way of seeing some of the campus and I found that knowing my way around a little bit helped me with any worries I was having as it started to feel a little bit more familiar and the new place you are living will eventually feel like home!

I would also make sure you go to any course welcome events that might be on as they are good opportunities to meet some of your tutors that you will have and also some of your course mates. I made some of my good friends here so I would definitely try and go to these even if other people that you know aren't bothering.

In terms of the work being different and worrying about this and what the modules will be like, first year at uni is a year where everyone is getting to grips with the workload and how to structure your work to fit in with how the tutors want it to get a good mark. Your tutors will help you a lot with this and you will get mark schemes and other resources to help you get the best grade that you can. Universities usually also offer other skills sessions outside of your timetables classes if you want any extra help with certain skills. At Hallam, there are often support sessions put on in the library or online, which help you on any extra skills from referencing to critical writing. You should take advantage of these and if you feel you need any extra help, then make sure you are going to these!

You may also get a personal tutor or something similar assigned to you so make sure you are talking to them about any worries you might have when you start. They can also help you out if you are struggling with the work or workload and give you some advice and help with this. You will also have a wellbeing team at your uni so make sure you are talking to them if you need any help or if you are struggling at all.

I hope some of this helps,

Hi

There is no need to worry, this a totally normal feeling.

There will be lots of people feeling the same, but this is helpful as it allows you to make friends more easily. As well as this it can help to improve your confidence and independence skills.

If you have any questions about uni, please drop them below and I will do my best to answer them.

I hope this helps,

Hi there!

It's completely normal to feel nervous about starting university, it's important to remember that so many people are in the same boat! When you first start at university there is a transition period where everyone is getting used to the new study style, new subjects, as well as trying to settle into a new environment. But there are so many things that can help you through this period, for example, some universities will have welcome events for new students within a faculty, which are a great way to get to know people on your course! Also, have a look at the societies available to you once you join, and see if there are any that you're interested in, that's a great way to get excited about your first year, try something new and meet likeminded people!

For your studies, don't forget to make use of any academic support services that are available to you, as these can be really helpful, especially in the first few months when you're getting to grips with everything! Also, if you have a tutor, they can help you find the right support for any specific issues or concerns that you have.

I hope this helps and best of luck for your studies!

Hey @Matadd!

Firstly, this is a normal feeling to have even if not everyone admits to it. Feeling anxious about university is expected as it can be a big change. From moving out or getting used to commuting to finding a new way of more independent study.

Most universities have Facebook or other private groups/chats for courses/halls which are always a great way to get to know people before you start your course and to hopefully put your mind at ease. In these groups you can ask questions, get speaking to people with similar interests and chat to others that are in the same boat as you 😊

Freshers/welcome week is also great for meeting new people, so I’d definitely recommend soaking up as many experiences as possible even if it feels a little out of your comfort zone at first. Another great way you can meet new people is through joining societies, clubs and sports teams through the university’s student union for example it's a good way to feel a part of something alongside your studies.

Wishing you the best of luck with your journey!
