Switching from full-time to part-time BSc

Basically I only have one year of full finding left from SFE because of previous study.
I've been offered a place on a new BSc course in September. Would I be able to switch to part-time study after my first year? The uni does offer part-time degrees, but I want to do the first year full time if its possible, as I'm gonna be 55 at the start of September, so time is of the essence.
The course is Social Care if it makes any difference to funding, and I would always be attending uni in person [NOT distance learning]

Hi there,

Have you spoke to the university and would the be allowing you to change form full time to part time after your 1st year of study? How many years of previous study do you have? Can you confirm the name of the university you will attend and how many years would the full time course be if you were to attend the full course?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew, thanks for your reply!
I've not spoken to the uni yet. The course is 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. SFE have told me I'm eligible for one more year of finance (previous study is 4yrs - I took a break in my 3rd year of a 3yr BA and returned sometime later, to repeat the year but again did not complete owing to extreme personal circumstances )
The uni is Leeds Beckett
Hi there,

Did you speak to Student Finance and did they say you were eligible for 1 more year of funding? Did you not receive any qualification from your previous course? You are correct that we do take your previous study into consideration when we assess your entitlement but you would not have one year of funding left. You’re entitled to funding for the length of your course, plus 1 additional year, minus any years of previous study you have. Here’s the calculation we used: 3+1-4=0 years of funding left for the Tuition Fee Loan. Even if you did have one year of funding left for the Tuition Fee Loan it would be allocated to your final year and not your 1st year so you would still not get funded for the Tuition Fee Loan.

Thanks, Drew

Note that in my experience and to my understanding, part-time funding is through a separate funding model and not influenced by previous full time study if you didn't earn a qualification, if the course is offered as a dedicated part-time degree. So you may be entitled to full part-time funding if you commence the course in part-time mode from the outset.
Hi there,

There may be options for a part time course but can you confirm you did not get a qualification from your previous course.

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,
Yes, SFE have confirmed I have one year of tuition funding left and it could be used in the first year of a new undergraduate degree.
My question is really if I would get finance on a part-time degree in Social Care. Or if funding is only available for certain subjects

Is BSc Social Care eligible for part-time finance do you know?
Hi there,

Did you receive an undergraduate qualification from your previous course?

Sorry forgot to say, no I didn't complete my degree, so just have HE diploma
As the official rep said, SFE calculate funding entitlement "backwards", so if you only had funding for a full time degree for one year, it would be the last year that is funded, not the first one (I know from painful, bitter experience...).

Any degree set up as a part-time degree can potentially be funded from that funding as I understand, but individual student eligibility depends on some factors - the key one here I think being that there are restrictions if you already hold an equivalent or lower level qualification in which subject areas can be funded as a second qualification.

Whether or not you earned a qualification from your previous studies will then be the key determiner in what funding you are entitled to. Having a DipHE may be a factor although as that's a lower level qualification than a BA/BSc I think it might be ok
Hi there,

If you did not receive a qualification for the full time undergraduate course then you would be eligible to apply for the full part time course. You cannot study one year full time and would advise you to just apply for the part time funding.

Thanks, Drew
