Paris 2024 Olympics: Athletics

-This Thread is about Athletics-

With the Olympics well underway, I’m looking forward to the Athletics events starting on Thursday (with the Men’s and Women’s 20km race walk).

Athletics has been at every Summer Olympics since the beginning of the modern Olympic movement (at the 1896 Summer Olympics). I love the athletics program because it traces its earliest roots to events used in the ancient Greek Olympics.

The current program includes track and field events, road running events, and race walking events.

The schedule for athletics can be found here: https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/schedule/athletics?day=1-august&medalEvents=true

Use this thread to make your predictions about these events and discuss the events as they happen.

Any British competitors who got a medal in athletics so far? are there any British favorites for a win any?
@PileaP

decathlon counts to athletics too, doesn't it? Neugebauer got the silver medal for the German team. Don't know what I should think about his performance. He was the favorite for the victory, so did he lose gold by winning silver? :hmmmm:

It does count yes
There were a few favourites (Warner, from Canada, being one) but the pole vault really surprised everyone with who went out.

By all means Neugebauer missed a great chance for the victory. Maybe next time in four years in... Los Angeles, right?

From what I saw, it seemed that Markus Rooth from Norway was just particularly good and surprised a few people with his performance for the gold! Did you watch the 100m sprint finals? So good!

I watched the 100m.
I couldn't decide from 1st-6th who had won.

The closeness of it was crazy!
The times were this:
1. Noah Lyles (USA) - 9.784
2. Kishane Thompson (JAM) - 9.789
3. Fred Kerley (USA) - 9.81
4. Akani Simbine (RSA) - 9.82
Must feel gutting for Kishane being so close

The men's 100m final only, but what a photo finish! was it ever so close to determine the three best runners? I can't remember.
Duplantis is amazing! jumped to a new world record and even the opponents and spectators applauding him for support. That is more precious than a gold medal when you got honored by everyone.

And what a surprise in mixed triathlon competition. Gold for Germany, what a surprise!

I did!
She had a really good race.
I've just realised that I've put "Kelly Hodgkinson" on my Paris 2024 thread.

On another note, can anyone guess how much the weight is that they throw in the hammer throw (men and women's)...

Are people not able to let the athletes start properly? This will be the 3rd attempt to start…

Reply 19

4th attempt you’re taking the Mickey and may as well let the other athlete back in at this point.
