how does clearing actually work

sorry this might sound like a bit of a ridiculous question , ive chosen my firm uni, put my deposit down for my accommodation and im pretty much ready to go, but there are a few things about my course that im not overly excited for and on the clearing app there are some courses at unis that are exactly what i want to do so ive registered my interest in them
how would clearing work in terms of changing accommodation ? my main concern is that im autistic so ive had to really push with my firm uni to have a studio room rather than shared accommodation, and i know that this wont be really guaranteed if i changed unis during clearing
does anyone have any advice at all or know anything about the full clearing process?? my firm uni is goldsmiths (psych and neuro) and some of the clearing unis that im interested in are middlesex, roehampton and queen marys (all just neuro)
thanks ))!

You cannot use Clearing for 2nd year transfers - its for 1st year entry only.
For transfers you need to contact the Uni by email with full details of your A levels, current course etc now.

so if theres a uni that im interested in i need to contact them right now even if i dont have my exam results ?? it wouldnt be a transfer as i havent started my course yet and it's a conditional offer not unconditional

If you're waiting for your Level Three Qualifications (A'levels etc), why are you asking about transfers?

You cannot start in the 2nd Year of a degree if you are only just getting your A level results.

You cannot ask about Year 1 Clearing places until you have your A level results - ie. A level Results Day.

The important thing is not to enrol on a course you're not happy with in the hope that you'll be able to transfer. Because you might not be able to and then you're stuck having wasted a year and all the associated costs.

Either try and get on a course you like this year via clearing. And as you note, clearing choces have limited options for accommodation, so might not be feasible for your requirements.

OR

Just take a gap, which in many cases is the best option anyway.

you just need to realize that if you have signed a contract for accommodation you are liable for it. It will depend on your contract. You might just lose your deposit or you can be liable for whole years fees. The only way to know what you are liable for is to check any contract you have signed.

hello! i know that i cant start in the 2nd year of a degree, i was asking about how it would work if i started the course and didnt like it. maybe i didnt phrase it very well, my mistake

You can ask about switching courses at that Uni - no guarantees - but you cant approach other Unis about switching to a different Uni once courses have started. Your only option would be to take a gap year and reapply for 2025 entry. And btw, starting any course at any Uni on the basis that you can change it isnt a brilliant idea. Think carefully about what you actually want to do, and why, before Results Day.

We would love to invite you to one of our clearing campus tours, we have a few coming up before results day:
