Phd after masters in international development

I am considering taking up MSc in international development from King's College london. Will I be eligible to do a Phd in Economics- on the topics of poverty and inequality from universities in the UK or the US? Will my lack of master's in economics affect my chances or will it not be an issue considering I want to take up research on areas of economics that I study at Msc in International Development course itself

PhD students are really investments so assuming you are wanting a funded PhD, you’ll have to make a case on a few things:
- You have suitable background knowledge (if you don’t have a suitable bachelors & masters qualifications, this then becomes a very big hurdle)
- you have the right research skills (you don’t need to be polished in the appropriate methods, but if you want to do something analytical.. they will expect you to have a solid understanding of the core theory of the area you are interested in). Does your bachelors & masters cover this?
- you are passionate & knowledgable of the research question you are asking (it’s a 3-4 year commitment, they need people who will stay the course & be independently motivated to produce publishable research)
- strong & competitive track record: ideally previous experience in a relevant area & a strong track record of academic success
