clearing offer for 2025

hi,

I had 4 med post interview rejections (on 2 waitlists) and have applied to sgul via clearing as a last chance to which I managed to get an offer! But then I realised this was actually for 2025 entry and I'm not too sure about doing a second gap year. I'm very grateful to have received this offer but I'm worried about being too old and whether I'd actually enjoy going to uni here?

I know if I reject this offer it's only a very small chance that I'll receive an offer from the 2 waitlists I'm on or via another university in clearing so I'm just wondering if you think it's better to just stick with this current offer I already have! or even go through the whole application system again to epply to unis i definitely want to go to but then the uncertainty is why i'm struggling to make a choice.. i'm just not too sure what to do if anyone has advice!

It is surprising that an offer is for September 2025 if you applied via clearing.

Is that right? Was it something you asked for ? Can you ask them.for 2024? Or specify happy to be pulled forward (if you are!)

Or was it one you applied to as one of your 4 and they have offered you a deferred place ?

Liverpool sometimes do that and then pull people forward closer to the start of the current year.

I would be tempted to double check with them what the offer is.

If you have the deferred offer you can't then apply this year.

If you apply this year you will need to redo UCAT and apply again and lose the deferred place.

Interesting one.

Who are you on a waitlist for?

Do you know if they pull off it at all in previous years ?

What are the implications of accepting a deferred offer on the waitlists? Usually you come off.

Edit. Also home or international?

And when specifically do you have to accept by?

noo i didnt originally apply for a 2025 offer so i was surprised to receive it. On the offer email it says "if you received an offer for 2025 you'll automatically be added to a waiting list for 2024" so now I'm just hoping i can start this sept
Sorry just edited my above post ...

Ooh. Am not suggesting you withdraw at all !

It's just that it's getting close to the point that med schools get the A level results (certainly within 14 days) by which time they will have a good understanding of who they will be accepting from their normal lists and from any waitlists. So not too long to wait.

If you want to go to med school then I would personally sit tight. If it comes forward for 2024 then that's great. If it doesn't then you are better off than if you didn't get in anywhere for 2024 but had to go through the whole drama of reapplying.

Just keep shtum on the others and see what shakes down. If it has changed to firm at SGUL then they may have taken you off the waiting lists. Check their policies,, I think one of them says they can't approach you, but you can approach them. But can't remember which of them it was (last year). If so you could ask them.to put you back on the wait list I guess if you are sure you are off it.

Go travelling. Earn money. Do Camp America or something, Have a more relaxed gap year without stress of applications.

Apart from anything else. Congratulations on your offer 👏 👍

i'm was the waitlist for leicester and liverpool and i know leicester went into clearing last year and liverpool took around 10 people off their waitlist. but now, idk if i would still be on their waitlist now that ive accepted this offer. sgul wasn't originally one of the 4 universities i applied to.

i am a home applicant who has just finished their first gap year!

and i know this sounds silly and stupid of me but i just accepted the offer because i didn't even notice it was 2025 as they have not mentioned about giving me a deferred offer at all, but on the email it says i have 14 days to withdraw from my choice.

thank you very much for replying to me btw!

This is the missing post. Wierd.

And it doesn't sound silly or stupid at all. Anybody would have snapped their hand off to get an offer at this stage 😂

My assumption is that you have achieved grades. If resits you may not want to sit UCAT again, but it might be sensible to at least book it. And you can cancel it if you don't need it.

yes i have my achieved grades so my 2025 offer is unconditional!

one thing im just worried about it doing two gap years, i feel like im just behind everyone else due to not being in education for that amount of time. im probably just overthinking it

I can see why that might feel that way, but so many people don't start Med straight from school. And personally I think a bit of life experience can make for a more rounded and mature individual and a more rounded and mature med student.

There is a good thread by Eristratusv "so you are going to med school" or similar that talks about the prep work you can do. And the anatomy (post 8 in the thread I think) to look at etc may be worth considering. Otherwise take some.time out and do you. You won't get another chance over that time span again. You may be very grateful it's 2025 in the end.

Congrats on getting accepted! Did you do the remote clearing interview? I did mine about a week ago but really didn’t have time to prepare, as I was on holiday, so I think it went badly :frown:. Still waiting for them to get back to me… had an email today saying ‘we’ll get back to you ‘soon’ but still not heard anything yet.

However, I am in the same boat as you. It wasn’t one of my 4 choices. The only thing thats putting me off St Georges is the high living costs being in london. That as well as I would have to self fund the tuition fee’s as I am a graduate.

I know this is a few weeks old but just for info, it is very very normal for SGUL A100 offers via Clearing to be deferred to the next year, it's been that way since at least 2020. That's how I got my place in 20/21 but I ended up deferring again so started 23/24 and going into second year in September. I was considering applying again to try for GEM and even redid and improved UCAT, but ultimately just couldn't give up a solid offer for a maybe.
