Confused about how much the Part-time Maintenance loan will be

Hi there,

I’ve applied for a maintenance loan for a part time course, due to a disability, in which I’m just waiting to hear back.

I do, however, have a bit of confusion on how it works.

I can imagine it is a lot easier if you are studying all the modules at the exact same time, with the same start date, as your study intensity percentage will be calculated against the maximum you are entitled to. So if you were to do 60 credits, and you could potentially get a max of £9000 for 120 credits, then you’d get £4,500.

However, how does it work if the modules you are studying don’t start at the same time, but they will at least be studied within the same academic year?

For example, I will be starting a 40 credit module this October, which would entitle me to 1/3 of the maximum entitlement, but I will then be picking up another 40 credits on February, so essentially doing 80 credits a year.

The issue is that you can not officially enroll on the next module until you are close to the end of your previous module, meaning that I won’t be able to prove I’m studying the next 40 credits until a few months after my entitlement has been calculated.

Will SFE recalculate and offer a back payment for situations such as this?

Thank you for your help, it’s greatly appreciated.

Hi there. Can you confirm the full name of the new course and university? How many years will it be? When does the new course start? Thanks, Leah.

OCA BA (Hons) in Creative Writing (loan already approved)

The degree is 360 credits and is studied part time, so it could be anything for 4.5 years to 9 years. It really depends how many modules you want to study a year, as they have an intake every month for each module. I intend on studying 80 credits per year for the first 4 years, then 40 credits in the fifth year.

I will be starting my first module this coming October, but I have to have almost competed this before I can enroll on the next one in February.

Just to note, I am NOT asking about anything to do with Tuition Fees. I know exactly how this works. I am asking specifically about the Maintenance Loan.

Thanks again for your help.

That's fine thank you. Can you confirm the full name of the university (not abbreviated) so I can check this on our system? Thanks, Leah.

Open College of the Arts
Thanks. This provider on our system does not have any courses for 24/25. Is it in partnership with another university? Thanks, Leah.

Yes, the Open University award their degrees as of last year.
Thanks. So, you would confirm on the application how many credits you are studying per year and we would assess the Maintenance Loan based on this. If you are studying 80 credit's in 1 year, this is 66.6% intensity of a full time course, and you could receive up to a maximum of ££6,811.18 per year (for the elsewhere rate). For the parental home rate this would be up to a maximum of £5,734.26.

If the number of credits you are studying per year change, the university inform us of this and your loan is adjusted accordingly. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,

Unfortunately, all you’ve pretty much done is repeat exactly what I have already said in my first. This has baffled me, ha.

If you could please actually answer what I have asked, it would be greatly appreciated, as I don’t want to have to explain and write this out again.

As I said on my first message, what you have just said is correct; however, as I also pointed out in my first message, I can only register on one module at a time, so I will be registered on only 40 credits to start with, but this will be bumped up to 80 credits in February.

What will happen regarding the maintenance loan?

Will I get a back payment once you have been informed I am taking more credits?

So, my calculation will show as 33% intensity in October due to starting 40 credits, but in February when I take another set of 40 credits, my study intensity will then be 66% for that academic year. But, since I have already received a part of the payments for the amount granted for 33% intensity, will the shortfall be added to my next payment to bring that up, seeing as I’ll only have been paid the equivalent of studying 40 credits for my first set of payments?

As I mentioned, I can put myself down for 80 credits with you, but the university can only confirm 40 credits initially, and can then only confirm 80 credits once I’m successfully registered on the next module in February.

Many thanks.

I’m just wanting to be 100% sure, as I’ll be lowering my hours due to this, and I will be royally screwed otherwise, so you can imagine how worried I am that I want to be sure exactly of how it works.

Hi there, We will initially assess you based on the credits on the initial application (40 credits). If this then changes to 80 credits the university will need to send us an electronic Change of Circumstances confirming the the credits have increased and a reassessment of funding will be done based on the new course intensity. You will be sent a new Notification of Entitlement confirming increased amount of funding and payments will be adjusted/backdated to reflect this. Thanks, Angela
