Hi there, thanks for this. I have a few questions:

1) If my firm rejects me, should I call them to see if they can reconsider or is there no point in doing this since they have already made a decision on my application.
2) I understand that to enter clearing you cannot hold any offers. However, if I do better than expected, is it possible to phone unis enquiring about their clearing vacancies, receive an offer in writing and only then reject my firm? Surely it is too risky to decline a place beforehand.

1) That ship will have sailed I'm afraid. Unless you are providing information they don't have (like "my school are sending my qualifications for review, please honour my offer if my grades change), then there is no point contacting your firm if they've rejected you.

2) Yes, generally. This used to be a process called adjustment which no longer exists. Unis may not give you a written email with you not in clearing but we expect that over the phone a uni should indicate to you whether they would give you an offer based on the grades you have if you were you in clearing. UCAS guidelines are a bit woolly on this, some unis may be hesitant to commit but we expect most will. The guidelines say "do not poach applicants who aren't in clearing" (I'm paraphrasing) but they also say "reassure applicants as to whether they would be successful if they did put themselves into clearing" (again, a paraphrase).
For those Universities that are online clearing applications. How does it work? Versus those over the phone? If Universities make a clearing offer over the phone do you have to say yes or no straight away ? Also - say you get your firm/and or insurance but you want to switch course at either one of those choices or an entirely different University - do you have to decline firm/insurance offers before you contact Universities to see if spaces available and you are accepted via clearing? I’ve read all the very helpful links thank you and mostly got it just these points clarifying would be most appreciated especially if some Universities are now doing email applications. Parent here just wanting to ensure all understood!

Hi! I was rejected for dental school this year however i got an offer for pharmacy. I would love to take a year out to apply again for dent. I need to do the UCAT. I am worried to withdraw my application on results day in case the UCAT doesnt go well and I then cant get back into pharmacy (as a backup). Does anyone know how long I get to make my mind up? i.e. how long could i leave it after results day to sit the UCAT and then decide if i enroll and go ahead with pharm or if i withdraw and go for a reapplication?

When is the enrolment at your uni for pharmacy?
You essentially have until then to decide to withdraw from your course.

Hi, your best starting points for this are post #10 immediately above yours and also our Clearing FAQ here: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7505793

TL;DR, given Clearing is a fast-moving environment, a phone call is the best bet because it's instantaneous!

To actually accept a Clearing offer you need to Decline your place (NB this step is irreversible!) and then add the Clearing choice. There's nothing other than good manners stopping you taking an offer over the phone and never adding it on.

If you rang them up on the Friday before and said I don't want the place any more, it's a **** move but it is valid. However, that's probably a pharmacy space that someone else could have had earlier on.

So, tomorrow and Wednesday - do a lot of thinking, chat with your loved ones and come up with a proper plan.

hi,If I get my grades, and am accepted at my firm choice can I still turn it down and if yes, what is the timescale to do this - does it have to be done on results day or do you have longer? Also would deferral be an option instead and can a deferral be rejected later in the year if you change your mind?thanks

If a place as your firm is confirmed on Thursday, then you will have the option to decline it and drop into Clearing. You don't have the option to opt for your Insurance choice instead (although you may be able to go there via Clearing).

You don't have you decide in results day, but obviously the longer you leave it, the less chance there is that you'll get something suitable via Clearing. In theory, you could wait as long as enrollment day at your firm - but that wouldn't be terribly polite.

You can request that your firm defer your confirmed place, but they have no obligation to do so. If they do defer it, you can always decline it later.

Why all the indecision?
