Academic misconduct

I’m currently studying at Arden University and one out of 3 of my assignments which I’ve submitted is being investigated for academic misconduct and the only thing I can think of is because I found my own sources outside of their library. Has anyone else had this? They’re not really communicating and I had to email them myself for me to find out. Also considering transferring university. How good is Open University for studying Law online?

For me, there are two possibilities.

1.

Your work was entirely your own. You wrote it and didn't copy and paste someone else's work but perhaps referenced something incorrectly. In my experience you generally only need to quote a sentence or two so it is never much of a problem.

2.

You used ChatGPT or copied expensive elements of your work from some other source. In which case I believe that is called cheating.

You know if you cheated or not.

Hi

I am only a former student there, but I do have over 10 years teaching experience in FE / H.E

The previous poster makes some great points. I would like to add that if you haven't got the APA referencing format correct it can flag up a high similarity score which would be investigated - did you include a reference list. It doesn't matter whether you got information from their online library or not.

Well, after weeks of chasing the university up, which first of all I find ridiculous as they should’ve kept me in the loop, they believe I used AI because my vocabulary is too advanced for foundation year. If Arden University expected such low standards of their students then I would’ve never applied here. Once my first year is complete I will be moving over to open university

PSA: I would not recommend Arden university AT ALL!

I study too at Arden and have been also called out onmiscounted for use of AI also, the funny part is the part ofmy assignment they are claiming I used AI for I spentages writing I used AI as a guide however reworded it, Imainly used it as a plan and guide rather than straight upcopy. After ages of waiting for a response I was told I’mon my final warning (never had one before) and that Imight not be able to resist the assignment so I’mguessing I’d have to do my foundation year again. I spentages doing my assignments and I’m not the smartestperson so I really do work hard for my grades. No issueswith the other assignments I did and I used AI for thesame thing to help with layout and to guide.

@carole ikwumere

Hi, I can't speak for Arden as I did my MSc and not BA Hons there, but when I was at a red brick University about 11 years ago, The marks in the final year of a three year degree are typically worth 75% of the overall marks, the first year grades don't usually go to anything. With any University you choose it is best checking their assessment and grading policies. Another factor is whether you choose to write a dissertation or choose to study different units

@Vystopian

For a holistic view of the quality of any University check out their Teaching Excellence Framework score from the Office for Students - it takes into account things like learner outcomes, student feedback etc and should be easy to find online. It is one of the UK's most recognised signs of quality for H.E

Hi! Could I ask what happened with this as I have a similar issue . It is my first assignment and my grade is on hold for misconduct. I am certain I did not copy any work from anyone or sources . I think my referencing may have been poor but still quite confused and worried .

The same thing has happened to me. And with a little investigation it’s clear that Arden University is renowned for doing this to students.

This is because they heavily rely on turnitin, which is a piece of tech created in a bid to try to detect AI usage, but in reality it is not equipped to do the job at hand. And as such has a disclaimer to make sure that no university penalises students due to their results. Turnitin AI detection is literally just there as a heads up to investigate further, nothing more. Unfortunately, Arden University do not acknowledge this.

I have disproven all of Arden Universities reasons for accusing me of using AI, and they are proceeding with the allegation just on the basis of my AI turnitin score and because I had referencing mistakes (of which I have addressed and shown how they occurred - human error).

Further, upon me chasing Arden University to carry out a professional process and send me a decision letter they then created new allegations in the decision letter without allowing for an investigation and response to these new allegations. Ironically their new allegation included accusing me of not assessing and accessing a paper that I had cited because one of my referencing mistakes was caused by taking a reference from a paper that I found on google scholar, and that paper having made a mistake in the reference. Luckily, I had put the correct reference in the body of my work, and the one with an error was only in the reference list, and so this shows that I had accessed the paper that I referenced. However, this new allegation also shows that they know that I did the work myself, and now have issue with the work that I did… whilst penalising me on the basis of having used AI, which they clearly now know that I didn’t do.

Just to add… they made me do a presentation of my work on teams, and all commented that I clearly have thorough knowledge of my work. This isn’t the first problem that I’ve had with the university. This university are not there to support their students, they’re there to make money. Whilst the lecturers have been a joy, every other department is a mess.

I agree! Exactly same thing happened to me with my outcome but I really just couldn’t be bothered to argue with them or argue my paper so I left it but I know it will happen again in the future because they’re absolutely useless.

did you use ai? I've also encountered such issues as I help students so I find it safer to check first before submitting

I have the same problem. I was accused of using AI for writing my paper, although I did not use any AI tools. I wrote an email explaining how I wrote the paper, but since I don't have any evidence to prove that I didn’t use AI, it’s difficult to prove a negative. Perhaps this is why the legal system is based on proving guilt rather than innocence.
I would like to know whether the university is required to provide any evidence to support their accusations, or can they just make such claims without any proof, essentially stating that "it is as they say" without further justification?
After they sent the email with the accusation, they stopped communicating completely and are simply telling me to wait. I suppose that regardless of the outcome of the investigation, or rather regardless of the truth, I will not finish the year anyway since they will not finish with my case to the end of the year. And maybe this is what it is all about in the first place. They want people to do the foundation year twice to get their money and not give any real education. However, I would like to know if they can be held accountable for making false accusations, wasting a year of my time, and the money spent on tuition fees.

So that’s exactly what i thought too - they’re accusing us to make people repeat foundation year so that they can get more money out of us because when I asked for evidence they were reaaaaching with the quotes they gave as evidence from my paper, when really and truly, it was all my work but my foundation year level paper was written at a-level/level 4/5/6 standard and they basically expect us to be writing at a dumb level. It’s really stupid and I will definitely be switching to open uni as soon as I get enough credits
