Are my uni choices bad?

I’m a year 12 going into year 13, I don’t have any predicted grades (got EUU on mocks so my teachers can’t give me predictions, it was just a really bad 2 weeks for me) but I’ve been working at around an A/B for one subject, and a C for my other two.

I think I can get one subject up to a B, and I meet several bits of criteria for contextual offers, so I’ve been looking at BBB and BBC unis in London, and ones I want to apply to are:

- LSBU
- London Metropolitan University
- University of Greenwich
- University of Roehampton

But when I told my brother who’s at Birbeck currently that I wanted to apply to those he just laughed and called the unis ghetto.

Is there anything that’s actually wrong with those universities or do people just not like them because they aren’t prestigious or wtv? Does anyone have better suggestions? I want to study criminology.

Thanks!

I think it's more appropriate to try to work as hard as you can to get your grades up. Even if it's a difference between a B and a C (or a B and an A) in just one subject, it can mean a difference between which unis you can ultimately end up applying for. If you want specific strategies and study tips on your specific subjects, you would need to mention them.

I'm not going to comment on the quality of unis, but I wouldn't say Birbeck is that much different than those you have listed. A uni where you can get a recognised degree, is still a good uni by any measure.

I think it's also appropriate to ask what you intend to do with your degree after uni, since it can mean we can give different suggestions depending on what you want/need.

Hi there 👋,

Everyone will have their own individual opinions on the type of university, they will want to go to. My only advice would be to check the universities out for yourself and not necessary go by what other people are saying.

Attend open days, read blogs, speak to current students there and gather as much information you can about the criminology course they offer. You can not beat going to the university yourself and seeing how you feel there!

My top tip, would be to write a pros and cons list about each university and what it has to offer.

Check out our blog on how to pick the university for you: https://wrexham.ac.uk/blog/posts/unihunt--how-to-figure-out-which-university-is-right-for-you/

Hope this helps and good luck.

I'm being bias here - I'm in my 2nd year at LSBU so would say go for it. I also compared greenwich and roehampton b4 started, lsbu has a better campus. Didn't consider london met.

Hi @phoenixx06,

I'd recommend visiting each of your choices. Attend open days and explore the local area, that way you can get a feel for what it will be like to study and live at that university. We would love to invite you to Roehampton's undergraduate on-campus open day on the 14th September 2024.

Roehampton currently offers:

and new for 2025 we have Criminology with Digital Forensics.

I am happy to answer any questions you might have about Roehampton!

You've received some good advice thus far. All I would add to it is to second visiting your choices if you can, to ignore your brother, and to have a look at the modules for each of your Uni choices for your degree choice and see what really grabs your interests.

I have quals from a uni in the top 5 in that subject field, from a Unis that was really a bit niche and also from the Open University and the one that was most useful to my career (I work in aerospace and avionics as an engineer with decent amounts of safety and regulatory authority) is the Open University. So, what I'm getting at is that, sometimes, the best university choice is the one that's right for you holistically.

By holistically, I mean that balance of an appealing range of modules on your degree, a good and fulfilling personal/social experience and one in a location where you will be happy. As a happy student is one who is more engaged with the degree and more likely to succeed.

I wish you the best of luck in achieving the grades you feel are more accurate to your abilities than the predicted ones (I had more than a few bad days at college in my time), and all the best in getting to where you want to be career wise.

Agree totally with @Grim_Squeaker above! I just wanted to add my personal experience, I had grades to get into pretty much any university but chose to go somewhere where I knew I would be happy, and I am still there 9 years later and know people who have stuck around much longer. Everyone has different priorities, which is fine, but for me, I wanted to enjoy my time studying and I haven't regretted it for a second since so ignore what everyone else is saying, it's your journey to take, no one else's! 🙂 - LG
