What are you interested in? My whole life was shaped by clubs and societies. Hockey wasn't for me and orchestra was way below my level as was sailing but found my place in the mountaineering club and never looked back. Go for it!

Hey there 😀

It is awesome that you are thinking about joining societies! They can be a fantastic way to meet new people, explore your interests, and make the most of your university experience.

I am currently a member of the Psychological Society at De Montfort University, and it has been a great experience. The society organises a mix of academic and social events, which has been a perfect balance for me. One of the highlights was our bowling night.

Joining a society related to your field of study can be beneficial academically and professionally. It can deepen your understanding of the subject, provide networking opportunities, and give you insights into potential career paths. Plus, it is a great way to connect with people who share your interests.

Apart from academic societies, there are loads of other options. Whether you are, or want to try something totally new, into sports, arts, music, or something more niche, there is likely a society for you. From sports teams and dance clubs to gaming and movie societies, the variety is huge.

Many societies host events like movie nights, tournaments, trips, and clubbing, so there is always something happening.

If you are not sure where to start, Freshers' Fair (and also university’s website) is a great opportunity to explore what is available. You can meet current members, ask questions, and get a feel for what each society is about.

In a nutshell, joining societies is a brilliant way to make friends, learn new things, and have fun. Do not be afraid to try out a few different ones to see what you enjoy the most. Another great example is my friend who joined the Pole Dance Society out of curiosity and she developed a new passion and established wonderful friendships.

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

What sort of societies are people in or are planning to join? I just wanna know what its like for some people

Hi there,

It's great that you are considering joining a society! They are great for meeting lots of people who have a common interest with you and it's also just fun to get to do something that you enjoy while you are at Uni!

I would recommend going to the freshers society and sports fairs so you can have a look around all of the different societies that are on offer for you to join and see which ones you might be interested in. There will be lots of different people here with stands telling you about their society and you can speak to them to get a bit more information and each one and see what you like the sound of. I would recommend maybe going to some trials before you commit to anything as they can be expensive and this way you can see if you really enjoy them and then pick one or two that you really like the sound of and go for it!

There will be loads of different societies that you can join, from academic societies to sports societies so you really just need to think about what kind of society you want to join and go from there. There will probably be a society for the course that you are doing if you are interested in this as you might already know people from your course there and sometimes these are free to join if you just wanted to meet some new people who are doing the same course as you.

In terms of sports societies, there will usually be a competitive team and a social team so if you want to join a sports team you should have a think about what you would be interested in. For a competitive team you will usually have to try out to be on the team whereas social you can just go for fun and to get to be a part of a sport team! They also usually have different expectations and commitments - on the social team it might be once a week whereas the competitive team may be 2 or 3 times a week you would need to be there so you also need to know how much time you might have to do these things.

The socials are also really fun and you get to do lots of fun things so it's definitely worth joining a society!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi!
I am currently about to start my third year of university, I have been a part of both Dance Society and Christian Union since freshers week. I felt so welcomed and met some amazing friends in both societies. Dance I found challenging enough for my ability level which meant I enjoyed it thoroughly. I am planning to try some new societies this year in addition to my current two. Societies are such a great part of university life I would recommend going to as many taster sessions as possible because you never know what you will enjoy.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

I'm not a professional but I have discovered that I do like playing volleyball. I was also wondering if learning languages was a society as well or if it was smt you would have to do yourself.

Hey there,

It's great to hear that you are thinking about joining societies at university. Personally, I believe that joining student clubs and societies is a great way to meet new people, make friends and develop new skills. Universities usually offer a wide range of societies catering to many different interests and hobbies, from academic, sports, cultural to creative ones. The University of Southampton offers 400+ such student clubs and societies! You can find out more about these societies here.

When I first got to uni, I joined the Women in Business society and a few other enterprise societies. These societies regularly organise events like workshops, panel discussions and competitions. I am always excited to go to these events because it was a great way to expand my network and learn critical real-world skills.

I also joined the kickboxing society later in the year. This is because I have always been passionate about staying fit and learning self-defense. We have regular training sessions which are very supportive and beginner friendly.

I am also a part of a few cultural societies like the Indian society and the Asian society. It's been a great way to connect with people who share the same cultural background, celebrate festivals and enjoy a slice of home away from home. The Indian society organises various events and celebrations over the year, from Diwali to Holi and cultural nights.

Overall, clubs and societies have been a major part of my university life and I would definitely recommend you to join a few to meet people, learn new things or just have fun!

I hope this helps!

All the best,

Hi,
Societies are a great way to continue a hobby at university or discover a new interest as well. There's such a broad range of societies available to join at university with lots of sports teams, music and arts societies and lots more. For instance, here at Lancaster we have a underwater hockey society, a hiking and mountaineering society and a Taylor swift appreciation society. Personally, i am a member of a society called SSAGO (Student scout and guide organisation), which is society at many universities, which does lots of camping and outdoors activities and i've found it a great way to make lots of friends while being at university.
Hope this helps!

What sort of societies are people in or are planning to join? I just wanna know what its like for some people

Hi there!

I have just graduated and I spent my 3 years in university as a part of the cheer team. Societies and sports teams are a great way to make friends and meet people who you have common interests with. I have a dance background so I decided in my first year to try something new and sign up for cheerleading as well as the dance society. I ended up only going to dance society in my first two years as I found it harder to travel to but I did the whole three years with the cheer team and was even the vice captain in my third year. I met my best friends at university through joining societies and it allowed me to stay healthy while still enjoying myself.

Cheer was a big commitment, as are most of the sports teams as they usually require you to travel to competitions or matches. Societies are definitely less of a commitment. Sports teams and societies always have fun events that they're doing, whether that's a social night, out for a meal or doing a fundraiser. These all give opportunities to meet people on other societies.

Every university has a wide range of societies they have available to join so I would recommend going to the freshers fair and seeing what they have available. If you find they don't have a society for something you are interested in then it is easy to make your own!

There may be an international society for those who come from other countries. You might like to join and try out your language skills.
