Is sociology a degree worth having.

I really don’t know what to do. I love sociology and want to do that as a degree but is it a good degree for future employment. If anyone who has a sociology degree or know someone with one who can tell me or even someone doing a sociology degree.

I find these websites useful for looking at degree job prospects:

First of all, I’d like to say it’s important you do something you enjoy at university. You’ll be the one studying it for 3-4 years, and at the end of the day, you’ll be the one who will be in debt, so make sure it feels worth it because you enjoy it.

Second of all, make sure you’re also interested in the career prospects as well. Sociology is one of those degrees that doesn’t train you for one specific job, meaning it provides you with a variety of transferable skills that cause be used in many jobs. So, use the links above and do your own research and see if any of the careers available after a sociology degree interest you.

This quiz may also help give you direction:

But, if your interested in a job that needs a specific degree (e.g doctor) then make sure you do the degree that allows you to qualify for that job (e.g medicine)

Finally, I’m gonna assume that there are not many jobs where you’ll use much of what you learnt at university, unless you became a teacher or academic researcher. But that doesn’t mean there are not jobs available for you after this degree, it’s just that most of them will not need your sociology knowledge, but rather the skills your degree taught you. But, for certain jobs I’d like to imagine your knowledge would be very useful!

I hope this helps.

Hi, I did my Sociology degree about 12 years ago and I really enjoyed it. It had a broad range of topics and you could choose unit's to study in the final year. I would say with a social science's degree to have an action plan of what you want to do later. I did a PGCE and started teaching in an FE college; sociology is an area where there have been cut backs in FE colleges. You might consider something like social work or local government. Also, employers like social science degrees for their graduate programs

Thanks you, I know sociology’s seen as a soft subject but I genuinely love it. Do you happen to know people who also have sociology degree and if it was difficult for them to find jobs and also what careers they went into.
