Hello! Honestly go you for taking AH English, I honestly could never it terrifies me. But some of my friends do/are planning to, and some books they want to write their dissertations on (so I've heard) include Rebecca, A Thousand Splendid Suns, Jane Eyre, A Tale of Two Cities, so you might want to look into these.
As for book recommendations off the top of my head, I can only think of YA Fantasy books if you like that, these are inspired by Chinese folklore/in that setting:

Six Crimson Cranes Duology

These Violent Delights Duology

Foul Lady Fortune Duology

Daughter of the Moon Goddess (haven't read but heard great reviews on)

A Magic Steeped in Poision (this one I didn't really enjoy but you might!)

Also, I'm writing this while drinking my lovely iced vanilla latte and catching up on some reading. I'm currently reading The Will of the Many (fantasy) and The Unexpected Everything (contemporary) side note: I never read and usually hate YA/NA contemporary romance, but I suddenly felt like it so found this recommendation on Reddit. Recently just finished The Serpent and the Wings of Night and A Darker Shade of Magic, both of which didn't click with me, sadly.

For classics - I heard that White nights by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Metamorphosis by Franz Kafta were good. They are on my wishlist atm.
If you are currently reading 1984 by George Orwell, then maybe Fahrenheit 451 By Ray Bradbury will be to your taste. In a future society where books are forbidden a fireman whose job is the burning of books, begins to question his job and has to choose between his beliefs and his loyalty to the government. It's supposed to be about the importance of knowledge and how a world can be corrupted by censorship as the government uses tools designed to distract us from the realities of our world.

These dont really fit the parameters but I had a lot of fun reading them.
Sayaka Murata's Earthlings.
Tomihiko Morimi's Tatami Galaxy and Tatami Time Machine blues.
