(Applying to BSC CS in ICL, UCL or Edinburgh as an international) 3 A levels with FM?

Imperial College:
At Imperial, there's no exact course for CS, but there are those for computing (BEng or MEng). Their entry requirements are:
A*A*A – A*AAA
To include:
•
A* in Mathematics
•
A*, A in two further subjects or AAA in three further subjects, with Further Mathematics preferred.
Recommended subjects
•
Computer Science
•
Physics
•
Further Mathematics
•
Ancient Language, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Electronics, English Literature, History, Languages, Law, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology
The entry requirements for similar computing degrees would be similar to the above (I would let you to look them up yourself).
Edinburgh:
The standard entry requirement is:
•
SQA Highers: AAAAA (achievement by end of S5 preferred). BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
•
A Levels: A*A*A* - AAB in one set of exams.
•
IB: 43 points with 777 at HL - 34 points with 665 at HL.
The grades used to meet our entry requirements must include:
•
SQA: Highers: Mathematics at A. Higher Applications of Mathematics is not accepted in place of Higher Mathematics. Advanced Higher Mathematics is recommended. Your Mathematics qualifications must have been achieved no more than two academic years prior to entry. National 5s: English at C.
•
A Levels: Mathematics at A. Your Mathematics qualifications must have been achieved no more than two academic years prior to entry. GCSEs: English at C or 4.
•
IB: HL: Mathematics (Analysis and approaches only) at 6. Your Mathematics qualifications must have been achieved no more than two academic years prior to entry. SL: English at 5.

At the very least, Further Maths is recommended for ICL and UCL. For Edinburgh, it does not explicitly state that they would not reject it, but at the same time there is nothing to say that they won't consider it as a suitable 3rd A Level subject. To me, FM would be fine for the CS degree at Edinburgh.

True. I've asked Edinburgh for this through emailing and they've just replied that a FM as a 3rd a level is fine.

Then will having 4 good a level grades give me an advantage over three good a level grades, if only 3 is considered and required for the application? Cuz I've seen other top colleges like cambridge stating that stronger STEM applicants have 4 a levels with one of them being FM (Though I don't see imperial and edinburgh stating that officially, and I haven't found data to support nor object this theory in those schools).

Cuz I'm still considering if it's worth risking it, I'm a bit afraid of 4 a levels affecting my school grade performance and possibly my a level performance (though I think it would have more effect on my school grade performance if any chance).

The 4 a levels with FM thing is often correlation and not causation. There are a couple very small exceptions to this (for example Cambridge Engineering I believe). I actually go to Imperial and checked with the computing department themselves when I was applying and they do not give better consideration to those with 4 a levels than those with 3.

It’s not a myth if you’re applying for a degree in English or history (and in many cases Law) etc. but for degrees like CS and engineering where maths is a fundamental basis of much of the content then it’s fine.
