The Student Room Group

Extenuating circumstances

Hello!! I have been experiencing swelling edema in my legs and can’t really sit for long hours. I’m struggling with submitting my coursework on time consequently. Do you think it’s a valid EC claim to make? I made an EC claim recently based on this and it was rejected. The panel however allowed me to resubmit my claim if I explain how my condition is effecting my studies which shows that they think it’s bit something that could effect studying. Tbh at this point I’m not sure of diagnosis but it’s just that I can’t study in bed Bcz I’m too unmotivated and I’m room is too small to stay in the whole day so I go to library to study and there I sit but just after a few hours I can see my legs swelling Nd I’m completely burnt out then I’m too tired for few days that I stay in my room and just can’t get out of bed. I struggle with coursework only as I have to sit to complete it for exams lectures materials I’m ok as I can study while standing or walking!!
Even if I resubmit EC and explaining in more details I feel like they’ll be like there are sofa chairs in library spaces where you don’t have to put your legs down and I know they are right. But it had really impacted my studies and things have been going wrong way for me and not were under my control. Idk what to and how to explain in my EC claim for them to reconsider it!! So I’m asking here on TSR for advice!! Thanks.
Also I’m very much embarrassed to make such EC claims as I m sure my programme tutor reads them too and they think that I’m an excuse maker :frown:

Hey! I can't answer your question but I did want to ask you if you want me to ask my uncle (he is a physicians/Doctor) about edema and what he would suggest you do to help mitigate the problem. I remember last week him talking about it on the phone with his colleague when i visited them for dinner, so I assume he would have some advice etc.

Just thought I'd offer. 🙂 My apologies for the randomness of my comment pol

Hello, hope this would help, but it sounds that this is affecting your mental wellbeing hence why you're struggling to do your coursework.

The best way to explain it is how it is affecting you on a daily basis not just in terms of university coursework.

The emphasis I think when submitting your EC should be on the fact that this condition is not something you can control in full but something that you can manage with the right help eg more time to do your coursework.

Hope. This helps

Heya, sorry to hear you're struggling :console:I think it's something worth persuing as a valid claim.
I think your best bet would be to contact your uni's disability office for advice (and mark the email as urgent as they could be busy, but they might prioritise you if you mention the current EC). What is also worth doing is make a GP appointment if you can get one to discuss any new changes now you're at uni because that's a huge change :hugs:. If the disability office gets back first, they might mention applying for DSA (disabled students allowance), which your GP can fill out so this means you can get adjustments e.g. you might be eligible for rest breaks during exams to move about.

The programme leader should not see details of the claim. Usually they are confidential between students and the relevant administrators. So don't fret about that.

It is worth it if this issue is causing a serious problem for you, but you will need evidence and the best way to get this is via a doctor.

Hi, I already have adjustments but that’s due to a different reason. This issue I started getting like since 4 months so I feel like if I keep on submitting EC based on this it won’t be accepted. Though I have been to A E several times and to my gp as well and they are aware of this issue. But it’s not confirmed if it’s happening due to an underlying health issue. I mentioned to my go that maybe I’m having this edema Bcz I’m sitting for long hours to study and she was like majority of students have to do that and not everybody gets edema so it is concerning. But I’m not sure how to explain it to the university like how it’s effecting my studies Bcz they can be like it’s been 4 months you’re facing this issue why you didn’t get it treated and if you get swelling so easily due to sitting you can complete coursework by standing or other positions :frown: I’m really not sure how to make them understand and how it it effecting my
studies
