Re: Clearing

Hiya, just wondering what you have to do to prepare for results day if you’re looking to go through clearing? Do I have to wait until I get my results or do I maybe have to sign up to anything before results day? Just wondering how it works as I’m really lost with it all. Any advice would be absolutely great! Thank you - Darcie

Hey @darciepn19

Have you already decided on the university/universities that you would like to apply to through clearing? If not, make sure you establish which universities you'd like to apply to ahead of results day - factoring in the below key thoughts:

Does this university offer the course I’m interested in?

What GCSEs do I need to get onto this course?

How many A-levels (or other level 3 courses) do I need, and what subjects should I study in order to enrol?

I'd then suggest going one step forward, factoring in:

Is this university further away from home than I’m wishing to travel?

What is the surrounding area like? Is it in the city or a self-contained campus?

Is the campus spread out or all in one place?

How much are the travel costs?

Can I drive and park my car if I need to?

Am I guaranteed a place in university accommodation in my first year?

On results day, have all your results to hand. Keep in mind that the universities you call to enquire about clearing places are going to ask you about your qualifications. Once you have your results, write them down so that you can refer to them on the phone. Another thing to do is take note of your GCSE results and any additional qualifications that you have obtained so far, so that everything is in one place to refer to.

In terms of contacting universities beforehand, some universities will allow this. When you have established which universities you may be interested in, check out their clearing page. For example, at our university, we allow prospective students to fill out an online enquiry form. That way, if the prospective student wants us to contact them on results day to let them know what we have available, we will have the necessary information and can call them back when results are out, and talk to them about their options. So, I'd definitely recommend looking at the universities' specific clearing policies as some universities may differ 🙂

I hope this helps, and best of luck at university!😃
