Last minute deferring a year

Hi, I've recently had a bereavement last month that has spurred on the decision to defer my university place until 2025. Before the event I was 100% going to uni in September. Obviously I don't know if I actually have a place until results day but I have Durham as my firm and St Andrews as my insurance. For either of those universities, how easy would it be for me to defer my place on results day until next year? Would it be possible or is it the case of having to reapply completely because it's so last minute?

Thanks so much

I don't know which uni I'm going to yet so I'm not sure if I can defer a place before I have one - please correct me if I'm wrong!!

With these circumstances it won't be a problem - when you have made your decision, even if you want to wait until you have your results, that'll be okay, just email and ask. If you want to ask before then, thats fine too.

Hi, I deferred my place at Durham University for the mere fact that I wanted to work for a year and make some more money. They were completely fine with it, you just have to make sure that you’re paying attention to your emails when it comes to reapplying for student finance and colleges. St Andrews didn’t like the fact that I was taking a year out and rejected me for it but you have a genuine, serious reason for doing so, therefore I think they’ll understand.

When you collect your results, ask a teacher to help you with the process. They will have dealt with this many times before. There were so many students in my year that deferred on results day because they were burnt out.

Hi there!

I am sorry for your loss and how it is affecting your going to university. I would advise that it is a good idea to reach out to both choices to see what their policies are about deferring a place. You can do this by sending an email to the admissions team.

Usually, universities would be fine with deferring a place for a year, but it is always good to be sure. If you also explain the circumstances, the university may be more inclined to grant you a deferral.

Best of luck with your results,
Lancaster University Student Ambassador,
Glory.
