The little house symbol is you're home/news feed. the bell is your notifications. The ones inbetween are videos, groups and marketplace.

The news feed is a collection of content from pages/groups/people you've added, things Facebook thinks you would like and a load of adverts - It's kind of the same as viewing latest posts on TSR
Notifications are normally when someone directly likes something you posted, comments/replies or tags you - again the notification bell on TSR is pretty much the exact same.

Also, how would I know whether or not I have already seen a particular news feed, apart from actually remembering it !!
