Lancaster Uni: Information and useful links

Lanc main page.jpg
Below has useful titbits of information of Lancaster Uni. My daughter started in September 2020 to study Physics, Particle Physics and Cosmology, and most of it is taken from daughter, the uni website and other sources of information. I also have a blog which has her journey of other uni open day visits, application, alevels, etc. (Leeds, Lancaster, York, Leicester and Oxford which is now a complete blog as shes since graduated and now studying a phd in particle physics at Manchester now)

Note I do have a previous thread started way back in 2020, however you cannot edit it due to the new TSR saying theres too many characters on a character count.

Getting Around Lancaster
Getting around Lancaster and other areas are relatively easy via bus. There are also train networks as well.
Lancaster uni uses the company stagecoach.
The main website for stagecoach and your student passes are here: https://www.stagecoachbus.com/regionaltickets/cumbria-and-north-lancashire/morecambe-and-lancaster/unirider This also changes due to the time of year. So currently in August, its showing them all, but as time goes on, some of the term ones disappear. Daughter and I recommend you have the Lancaster Bay Terms 1 - 2 - 3 UniRider 2024/25 pass. This gets you to uni and back to the city and also to Morecambe if you fancy the sea front.

If you are a first year student staying on campus, its likely the bus pass is not worth it, as its unlikely you will be going to the city 5 days a week.
There are a few bus stops around the perimeter of campus, including the sports centre, but the main one is the underpass which is situated underneath Alexandra square which is the centre part of the university.

The buses that run into the city which we know are:
The 1a which travels down the A6 to the city centre. The 100, which goes through a student area called Bowerham which is south east of the city. Theres the number 4 which also goes to the train station in the city. Which is great for open day visits, as well as visiting family and friends on the train.

Above is the map, but you can also find it here:
https://tiscon-maps-stagecoachbus.s3.amazonaws.com/ZoneMaps/Cumbria/1223%20Lancaster%20Map.pdf

To the lakes:
Catch the 555 which gets you to Ambleside.

To Blackpool:
Catch the number 42 from the city centre/uni

To Preston:
Catch the 41 or the 40.

Trains:
Trains are various ones. You can catch a direct to Edinburgh, which is great if you want to do a weekend in a hostel with friends. You can also catch a train to Manchester, again another great city to visit with friends. Daughter now lives in Manchester doing her phd (2024-2028 ) but she did live at Nottingham, so with that in mind, theres two route back to Notts. You can either do Lancs to Manchester, Manchester Piccadilly to Nottingham, or Lancs to Leeds, and Leeds down to Nottingham.
Lancaster to London is to Euston station.

Maze map is great, because you can find your lecture rooms.

If you are just visiting Lancaster for an open day you have the south spine (in the photo below in blue), and the north spine (in the photo in red)

You can walk up the spine (partially covered walkway) and visit various points along the way.

The 9 Colleges:
Lancaster is a Collegiate Uni and has 9 colleges. Here are the links to each one

Which is the best college? There really isnt one as such. There used to be stereotypes, such as county and grizedale are the party ones, Fylde sporty, furness quieter but it really does depend on your flat and flatmates.
If you are going to choose, think about how far away is it from your department. If you dont mind a 15 mins walk and wanting the a home away from 'work' then go for the ones furthest away. Likewise if you want to roll out of bed to the department or lectures, choose the closest.

Price are subject to change. I used to post them but TSR didnt like me editing old posts, so here is the link, and then go right down to the bottom of the page for prices.
