The Student Room Group

completed Uni year 1

Passed the year, thank god needing two resits after only failing 2 exams and got an overall of 45% for year one with one 2.2.

I went in to year 1 knowing first year didn't count towards my graduation result so grnted i didnt put the effort in that i could have done but in doing so meant i didn't stress myself out as much as others. I also had a job too which helped financially ik it can be pssoble for people to go from a third to a first.

work experience is something that is heavily reminded too us during the course. as third year i will be doing a placement. and want to keep the part time i have currently as ik it will help massivly after graduation but dont know weather to keep it so i can focus on studies.

Hi,
Balancing a part-time job with your studies can be challenging but rewarding. If your current job helps financially and provides valuable experience, it’s worth considering keeping it, provided you manage your time effectively. Create a detailed schedule that includes both your academic commitments and work hours, ensuring you don’t overextend yourself and risk burnout. Communicate with your employer about your academic schedule to explore flexible arrangements. Monitor your academic performance regularly and seek support if needed. As you prepare for your placement year, consider how your part-time job might complement your career goals. Maintaining this balance can enhance your financial stability and career prospects, provided you keep a close eye on your workload and well-being.

Hi @CallumBradbury_ ,

Firstly congratulations on passing first year!

Like Ethan mentioned, there are pros and cons to having a part time job whilst studying. I had a part time job in retail during my first year, however I dropped the job to focus on my second year. For me, the retail job wasn't providing me with relevant experience or decent money, and was taking time away from my degree. Second year was much more time intensive and I wouldn't have had time to keep it up anyway. I instead started working as a student ambassador so I could fit the hours I worked around when I wanted to work.

My best advice is to consider how much time you have and what the best use of that time is.
Is it beneficial experience?
Is it going to take too much time away from 2nd year studying?
For applying to your placement company, would they prefer seeing work experience at this job or a higher degree mark?

Hope this helps,

Joshua

My job is in a bar - so skill sets like team work, communication and those sort of skills are vital for my course which is Mechanical engineering. so personally would like to keep it since i only work friday and saturdays. and with my scheduel now being released for second year i have the wednesday and friday off too. which wasnt before i sent this message
Brilliant stuff, I'm glad it looks like you can fit it all in to your schedule.

Best of luck moving in to year 2!

Joshua
